More often than not bollywood films don't even need a mention, but here comes a movie which seems to make the viewer feel good!To say the least would be to say that 'Raincoat' is simply mind-blowing and the primary reason to this would be the brilliant script of the film.

Infact , it makes me wonder how the director could make such a momentous movie from such a simple plot !

THE PLOT

Ajay Devgan is Mannu who comes to Calcutta to borrow a few thousand bucks from a set of old pals to start a new venture. On a rainy afternoon after he has managed to collect 12k he goes to meet Aishwaria Rai aka Neeru his old flame who married another guy for prosparity and other comforts of life.

Their passion for each other is re-kindled as they talk and talk in the candle lit dingy room full of antique wood furniture. Both of them are down the dumps but each is trying to convince the other of their abundance of material possessions and resources.

Neeru borrows Mannu's raincoat to go out and buy him some food when the landlord comes inside and reveals the true story to Mannu. Neeru is completely in debt and is surviving on the pittence she and her drunkard husband earn by subletting the rented house to a furniture dealer who stores his stuff and takes it away as and when necessary. Nothing in the room belongs to them and they have not paid the rent and would be asked to get out in 2-3 days when the court sends up the notice. Mannu is destressed at hearing this and gives the 12k to the landlord and asks him not to trouble his beloved.

Here Neeru finds the letter in the pocket of Mannu's raincoat and gets to know of his destitute situation. Secretly she puts her only possessions , her bangles and chain in the pocket along with the letter to help her lover in distress. Sounds a bit like O Henry's THE GIFT OF THE MAGI doesn't it??

THE PERFORMANCES

AISHWARIA RAI: She is superb as the poverty stricken housewife

AJAY DEVGAN: He is understated as needed for the role!

Others like Mauli Ganguli and Annu Kapoor lend commendable support.Sameer Dharmadakari needs to get his ditcion fixed!

The real hero of the film though is the brilliant direction and script and ofcourse the resplendent art direction!
