Raincoat marks the debut of Rituparno Ghosh in Bollywood.
The story revolves around the two protagonists - Manu and Niru played by Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai respectively. Manu and Niru have been childhood friends and sweethearts. Manu's lack of stability and steady income forces Niru to marry a rich man and settle in Calcutta. Heartbroken, Manu becomes a recluse.
6 years later, Manu comes to Calcutta and hunts Niru down. Both Niru and Manu try to portray success and happiness in life. Niru brags about a globetrekking husband, servants and the works. Manu claims that he is a successful TV producer. While the opposite is true in both cases. Their conversations and experiences forms the rest of the movie
Loosely inspired by O.Henry's ''The Gift of the Magi'', this movie bring about the subtle nuances in people's characters. Raincoat is a welcome change after series of gaudy, superficial masala movies. What makes the movie different is the simplicity with which the storyline has been handled. The sets, the scenes are very natural. Aishwarya Rai is finally showing some traces of being an actress. Potraying serious, deep roles are Ajay Devgan's forte. The language and dialogues are very commonplace and that what makes it likeable.
It's a good movie for those who want to see something different. It is clearly a movie for the ''classes''. For the ''latka Jhatka'' hungry crowd, this movie is a definite letdown.
