Music Album of R A I N C O A T

Raincoat (2004)

MUSIC: Debojyoti Mishra

ARTISTS: Subha Mudgal, Hariharan, Meena Mishra, Poetry by Gulzar

This may not be an album that you may listen to everyday. But, this contains songs that will haunt you someday or the other on your journey of Life. That is, if you are leading a normal humna life full of emotions...especially the feeling of having Loved & Lost.

In this revu, more than just penning the lyrics here, I prefer to give it a different treatment. I do not know how well it will be accepted by the readers but, I refrain from mentioning just the https://lyrics. I'll do my best to drive home the point that these lyrics wish to convey. Do let me know your views on the same. Also, a heartfelt ''Thanks'' in advance for reading through this emotinally-charged revu :)

The compilations at a glance:

Mathura Nagarpati Kahe tum Gokul jao:

ARTIST: Subha Mudgal DURATION: 06:34mins

Lord Krishna, as referred to in this song is the legendary icon of Love from West India. According to the stories Krishna & Radha were lovers who were estranged (for reasons that I do not know) and both married different people (well, let me not delve into when & why & how many).

Although this song refers to Krishna asking him why he is trying to seek out his lost Love, Radha. However, it is apt to the film since the characters involved have a similar story to tell. This is my most favourite song from this album and let me try & unveil it for you.

The lyrics ask, ?what is it today that beckons you, Krishna, to go to the place where your estranged beloved, Radha, is settled with her husband & family. It kind of pleads giving reasons why it is not wise to seek out this lost love leaving all your other duties and responsibilities. Singing and with each verse it brings out the emotional turmoil that this lover is undergoing before he sets out to meet her. It also mentions that maybe his beloved may be settled well in her family, being a wife, mother, daughter-in-law & happily going about her business. She must?ve already buried those emotions and those tears must?ve ceased flowing thru? her eyes already. Then Why can?t he forget her? Why does he want to relive that pain?

Piya Tora kaisa Abhimaan:

ARTIST: Hariharan DURATION:05:47mins

A love story gone sour. Why? Emotions played havoc in their lives and circumstances added fuel to the fire. Today when the lovers look back, remorse & castigation is all that?s left. This song, sung in Hariharan?s voice rebukes the lover of having done his part of professing love but, being rejected the union because of his love?s ego.

It is not self-respect, it is not dignity?it is ego. I waited for you once, you didn?t turn up. Now, why should I wait anymore for you because my ego has been hurt. It talks about pain & there?s a slight trace of hope of union?still, ego has played it?s part and now, all that?s left is bitter regrets.

ARTIST:Subha Mudgal+ poetry by Gulzar DURATION:05:11mins

This is the same song, female version. However, it is also laced with Gulzar?s poetry which is a sonnet to the soul of this film & album. U gotta listen to this!!

Raah dekhe:

ARTIST:Subha Mudgal

This is another heart-tugging song that I?ve enjoyed thoroughly from this album. It?s a short one of about 2-3 mins. It sings from the perspective of the female lead of the film who has been waiting endlessly for her Love, lost love?in this case. She sings of how time has passed but, she is still waiting for him. This entire world of mine awaits your arrival, beloved. Coma back, my Love.

Akele Hum Nadiya Kinare:

ARTIST:Subha Mudgal DURATION:02:26mins

Again the same story of waiting & loneliness. It sings of from the perspective of a woman who?s pleading to know atleast a name by which she can call him, or rather, a name for the relation in the broader sense. It?s a sadistic song?however, hummable!

Hamari galiyan Hoke Aana:

ARTIST:Meena Mishra DURATION:04:12mins

This is a typical Bihari wedding song, in a happier tone. Wedding is a wonderful occasion of gifting & receiving. The song hums of all the possible gifts that can be collected from anklets to bangles to other accessories :D and there?s a mention of almost all female relatives from the mother to chachi, bhabhi, didi, mausi, bua!

Hamari galiyan Hoke Aana (Sad version):

ARTIST:Meena Mishra

Same title line but, the verses differ, firstly being slow paced and also it?s more on the abstract gifting part. Lines with hidden meanings, that?s what I unveiled from this song.

Jug Jiye:

ARTIST:Meena Mishra

Again a folk-lore. This one is a blessings & a bit of fun-filled song. In short, keeps up with the film?s treatment as being between mates from the Village of Bihar in India.

My observance was that Subha Mudgal?s songs were more commercial and better among the lot. The last 3 songs are more of folk-lore genre which are not fated to be remembered for long. Atleast, I?d listen to it only if I have no option of skipping ?em. But, the initially mentioned 5 songs (including the repeated one) will be a must-hear at least once!
