RJs:

I am here in Bangalore for last 9 years. I am not a master of Kannada, but better than many others living here longer than me. I was here in the year 2000.I was doing my engineering those days. For entertainment - all we had was a 140/- audio cassette player.CDs and music systems were beyond a world for us.Majestic were the place where we would go to shop. And M. G.

Road was like going to another world for us. I mean, days were not sparkling for us. One day one of my friends bought a radio. The black one. We don't get to see those now a days. Mono of course. The best part was - U could run it even with a AC to DC adapter. So, the new form of entertainment got quick acceptance. But initially - AIR was only thing we could enjoy.

And there was not much to enjoy in it. Then the things changed. One fine morning we got to know that even Bangalore would have an FM channel. It was a Friday I guess. I remember - 2 nice voices. One was of Geeta Modgil. Rajiv, My roommy, was tuning the radio and I was counting to get the best reception. The voice was so refreshing. The RJs were Darius, Rohit Barkar, Priya Gapathy, Geeta Modgil and most famous was Sheetal Iyer. We were addicted with her show - "Matinee show" 11 am to 2 PM. Retro songs. We bunked many of our classes just to listen to the magical voice of Sheetal. The best part was her trivia. She would share some facts about that song and every time the song is repeated we get to know some thing new about that song. Not only song. Her trivia on singer movie, actors -

I mean one would love to know those facts. I came to know secret behind the name Jhonney Walker and Manna Dey - Kishore Kumar disagreement on the song Ek Chatur Naar. SMS were not free those days - still we would SMS the quiz answers to just to listen our names from her. It was a show every one would listen to - Kannadiga - non Kannadiga. It really proved - Music has no boundary. I requested an auto driver to play Matinée Show, talked about old songs, at the end got a friendly discount from him. (It happened with me once). Near my college - me and two sisters, who ran a small food corner, became friends; thanks to our common interest in old songs and Sheetal's Matinee Show.Even in BMTC - driver had a small radio and someone requested to increase the sound - the Matinee show.Once Sheetal left the station - I kind of lost charm of it.Now - the RJs are not as innovative a Sheetal was. They don't show that intelligence. And I don't find them playing songs close to heart. With respect - locals songs are ok. But - to be very honest - they are noisy. Same goes with new Bollywood songs. Please play some song which makes us listen to it.Please give me back my good radio days.
