Radio City kicked off in the Garden City a few years back with a lot of noise. And even today it produces more noise than meaning.
Target Crowd
Is:
college going teens
Singles earning a five figure salary
Housewives (occasionally)
Their main target is the janta stuck in traffic.
Is Not
Who want soulful, melodious music
Who are really interested in Music, who want to know the music director, the lyricist, tidbits about the movie or song.
How is the music?
Repeated songs. One song becomes the pet and it keeps repeating day and night.
Mostly latest songs, special attention to loud, item numbers.
Kannada songs over weekends.
English songs late at night.
Variety of shows
Basically, there is no difference between the shows. All are the same. The jockey yaps away and when his/her mouth hurts, the music is played. And now there is that awful show – Stupid Cupid! After listening to that show for 5 minutes, I decided to write this review. Radio City – The matrimonial radio station.
Radio Jockeys
Darius, could you speak a little less please? I have a pain in the ear whenever I listen to your shows.
Fiona, can you drop that accent, dahling?
Sheetal, unfortunately no longer on Radio City, was the only sensible RJ on that station. She used to play a wide variety of songs and she ‘knew’ about music and film. Thanks Sheetal, for giving me that information on the Rafi song.
Vasanti is tolerable.
Sindhu is good.
Am I glad Johnsy no longer exists!
Pros
The show from 11 to 2 is usually good. That’s when they know that all the college teens are busy in college, working people are busy in office and there is not much traffic on road. So, they target the ‘oldies’.
Cons
There is too little music, too much of yapping and tooooo many ads!
RJs make no sense most of the time. Ask them to take a quiz on film and most of them will flunk
No variety of music. One song from one hit movie gets played all the time. Increase your database, RC. Get some knowledgeable RJs.
They do not give ANY information about the singer/director/movie/lyricist. The only information they give is “so and so acted in that song!” Give me a break.
Need I say more?
