“Pyaar chukaaya nahi jaata like ehsaan” one of the lines I liked in RNBDJ. Rab ne bana di jodi is another love story from Aditya Chopra, the master movie maker who gave DDLJ. It bears a smart resemblance to “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”. The basic plot is same just the difference here is SRK plays both Ajay’s and Salman’s character.
My expectations from this movie were huge. I drove 2 hours to Irving, TX to catch a show and thankfully I don’t regret doing that. I almost wrote off SRK as a lover boy after Kal Ho Na Ho, but the king of romance is back with a touching love story. DDLJ, KKHH, KHNH, Mohabbatein etc… had superficial love stories or say dramatic which are uncommon for a common man.
Surinder Sahni (SRK) is a loveable, nerdy and selfless character who falls for Taani (Anushka) at first sight coz she is bubbly, chirpy and full of energy kinda girl. Due to some sudden changes in the proceedings Taani is married off to Surinder without any love story in between them. Surinder tries his best to make Taani happy but he fails. Taani feels that destiny played a joke on her and she was robbed of a love life.
Later on Taani joins a dance competition and SRK enters the competitions in a different avatar as Raj; a cool outspoken guy. He does so to see that his wife gets the happiness she deserves. Fate makes them dance partners. After some initial stupidity Raj makes his way in her heart. Later on the character Surinder is in a dilemma that he might lose his wife to Raj; which might make him lose her forever; since Raj does not exist. In the climax Taani decides to stick to Surinder and aborts the plan of running away with Raj.
Sharukh proves that he is best at romantic roles. As Surinder he plays a sacrificing or selfless character who wants to make sure that his wife is happy even if it requires him to change his character. As Raj he completely changes into an honest flirty guy. Surprising that at this (43) age he carried off this (Raj’s) look. The movie belongs to him and he does well.
Anushka is a nice girl who definitely looks Punjabi. Her character is cute, bubbly and loveable. She is better in the climax sequences.
Vinay Pathak is too good in a short role. He is a natural actor.
Question was why Taani can’t recognize Surinder when he changed to Raj? I think due to the complete change in his character and mannerisms. How can you expect someone in your life to change so drastically? It is plausible. When we can keep our thinking mind at home for brainless comedies then why can’t we do it for this one?
The movie is a lesson for all the girls out there who are waiting for a macho guy to ask them out or who have infatuation for striking personalities. Whoever the guy may be but the love in him should be selfless and profuse. Destiny always has something good for us if we look at it in the right way. I personally feel that real bond in relations is not by attraction but it is by the silent sacrifices that one makes to make others feel good. There are really few who do so.
In parts it is boring sometimes and a little lengthy and not as entertaining as DDLJ and Mohabbatein but worth a watch. Go N Watch one of the cleanest love stories in recent times.
