After the success of Bheja Fry there was a flood of small budget films with various new themes and new stories. Same set of actors like Vinay Pathak, Rajat Kapoor, Ranvir Shorey also appeared in small budget new concept films. Unfortunately most of the films didn’t work, because of various reasons. This week’s new release Raat Gayi Baat Gayi also tells a different story with a subtle humor and with same lead cast of Rajat Kapoor and Vinay Pathak.
The film is a small budget film but the expectations are high because of the cast and curious storyline and smart promos. The big question is whether the team is successful this time meeting the expectations and the answer is yes.
Raat Gayi Baat Gayi is funny comedy that starts with a night of questions and ends up in bed with zero answers!
Raat Gayi Baat Gayi **catches Rahul (Rajat Kapoor) waking up on a very heavily hung-over morning with his wife Mitali’s (Iravati Harshe) constant cribbing. Whilst her voice crashes through his head he remembers snatches of a conversation he had the previous night, at a party, with a stunning young woman, Sophia (Neha Dhupia).
As he blinks through his thoughts he stumbles on the fact that one thing led to another and Sophia and he got drunk, talked a lot and finally ended up in bed making crazy love to each other---or did they*? The end of the night remains hazy.
What’s worse is that Mitali just can’t seem to keep it together around him—she’s livid, she’s upset, she’s not telling him why---all rolled into one and Rahul keeps thinking back to the previous night and wondering if she caught a whiff of what happened the previous night with Sophia.
As Rahul chases his night for answers, his friends Saxena (Dalip Tahil) and Amit (Vinay Pathak) are suffering through their own marital crises! From here the film is about Rahul trying to remember what happened last night with the help of his friends.
Film is full of funny situations and provides a relief from the usual mind less comedies, though its bit intelligent. Saurabh Shukla shows the touch of very fine director in some really hilarious scenes. Party scenes are very convincing and show the real picture that how people behave after few pegs down.
The film slowly grows on you and after few minutes in to it you also become very curious to know that exactly what happened last night between Rajat and Neha. Few scenes come out brilliantly like patch up scene in coffee shop between Vinay Pathak and his wife or the scene when Rajat and Dalip Tahil both are in Neha house hiding in the same cupboard.
Saurabh Shukla also handles the Indian sensibilities very maturely, and restricts to be far from sensuous when you expect it to be. Climax also is not shocking and you can predict it few minutes before whats coming next. Still the pace of the film keeps you glued and you do not feel bore for a single minute.
Now Coming to actors, Raat Gayi Baat Gayi works because of its actors. There is some brilliant and effortless performance by most of the actors. Rajat Kapoor and Vinay Pathak are absolutely delight to watch. Neha Dhupia is controlled and enacts her part very effectively. Dalip Tahil is also in top form and performs his part convincingly. Ranvir Shourie in a cameo as Australia stuck NRI is good. Rest of the other actors also delivers fine performances.
The film is for sure for the multiplex audience and will work among them. On the whole Raat Gayi Baat Gayi is a well made film coupled with good direction and brilliant performances. Definitely an enjoyable film, watch it after you finish your new year celebrations, it will take away your hangover better than any other pill.
