The way of the Gay!. Review on Queer Eye for The Straight Guy

Okay people, lf you don't already know about this summer's super hit show (11 episodes aired so far) then you obviously know NOTHING about pop culture... that's okay we can work with that. The premise of the show is five gay style gurus making over...sorry ''making-better'' (as they call it) a style-deficient straight man in five main areas:

Fashion, Modern Culture, Grooming, Interior Design, and Cuisine...The superheroes responsible for these fields are Carson Kressley, Jai Rodriguez, Kyan Douglas,Thom Filicia and Ted Allen (respectively) who call themselves the ''FAB 5''.

The straight guys (here on I will refer to them as SGs) are usually turned in by their girfriends/wives/SFOs. The show has stirred a lot of controversy both in the gay community as some feel that they are being stereotypically portrayed and the straight community who think it's unfair that the SGs in general are being portrayed as certified slobs. Whatever the case is, the two primary reasons for the success of the show are its humour and its substance. The chemistry between the Fab 5 is so good that it's hard not to tune in each week to view thier crazy antics. Make no mistake the Fab 5 are professionals in their respective fields who immensely transform the SG into an ultra hip man. I mean the results are truly amazing! (all this without resorting to fat-sucking, crash diets or scalpels...apologies to the Extreme makeover fans)

The show starts off with the Fab 5 in their fabmobile assessing the SG's biodata: his occupation, his vital stats, his problem areas, his dating/marital status and lastly the objective of the make-better-operation, usually centered around something like a party, a marriage proposal or a romantic evening with their chikkies. Having said that let's get to know a little bit about our heroes shall we...

Carson Kressley(FASHION SAVANT) : a ranked equestrian and loads of experience working for RALPH LAUREN (under sportswear for men) and a complete laugh riot. He has some of the best one-liners (very in-your-face kind of humour) and quips that make you laugh til you drop ...some memorable moments I recall are:

-''I said walk.. not march like a weird little troll'' (Episode 2)

-''there's a hooker in Trenton who wants her boots back'' referring to one of the SG's slutty-looking girlfriend (Episode 3)

-upon being irritated by the SG's girlfriend who constantly nags that..'' the old Tom didn't do this, the old Tom didn't do that'' ...Carson says ''the old Tom didn't put poison in your fish either'' (Episode 3)

and he constantly hits on the SGs to see how they respond and it's usually very funny (nothing offensive)

there are many more like that which is why you should tune in every Tuesday night @ 8 p.m on Bravo!or for our Canadian viewers Sat nights @ 11:45 p.m on Bravo! canada right after Sex and the City or just tune in to hear him say ''couture'' or ''jujj''

Jai Rodriguez (CULTURE VULTURE): a triple threat (singer/dancer/actor) who has performed on and off broadway (Rent and most recently Zanna Don't!) He is absolutely adorable (almost like a little brother, which makes sense since he is the youngest of the fab5...24) Very cute and very funny but I wish his area was more defined since the media at times is hard on him (calling him useless). Damn the Media!!!

Kyan Douglas (GROMMING GURU): attended the Aveda Institue New York and worked at the upscale Ajorro Studio in Soho and also on some TV projects. He is a number one HOTTIE!!!!! His devilish good looks and his charm are enough to win any girl/guy over! It's guys like him who make me wish I was a GAY man so I'd atleast have a chance with him but me being a girl and all... it's highly unlikely that'll happen..I have never been so disappointed in my life ::takes a moment to sob in the corner::

So we're back then ::awkward pause::

Thom Filicia (DESIGN DOCTOR): a successful interior designer who has been featured in House Beautifuls' top 100 designers. Has his own company Thom Filicia inc., a house in the Hamptons etc etc. His job is by far the most challenging since he's incharge of the SG's houses which look like HELL-HOLES pre-makeover.I mean really how can you live like that? and don't even get me started on the bathrooms <shudders> He transforms their hovels into not just a livable space but a paradise (the show takes care of the expenses) all the while keeping in mind the SG's likes/dislikes. His humour is blunt and terribly funny (with his various hick voices) while it doesn't overshadow Carson's humour...they're both very different stylistically(in terms of the jokes) but equally funny. Thom's not bad on the eyes either (he also makes me wish :( ..okay not with that again) . He is truly a miracle worker!
