Queen*1/2: An innocent and simple girl-next-door Rani (Kangna) from Rajouri decides to go it alone on her own honeymoon to Europe after her groom-to-be Vijay (Rajkumar Rao) unceremoniously walks out on her on the eve of their big fat Indian wedding.
Queen is made up of a comedy of errors that we Indians invariably find ourselves in at a foreign land. From grappling with a new language and land to being served unappetizing non-veg food, and from gyrating on Bollywood tracks and stepping out of our comfort zone after being wasted on alcohol. Rajjo does all of that and more.
She cracks ‘non-veg’ jokes to firangs, confuses a vibrating dildo for a massager and packs it for her granny and her email ID is happyrani@yahoo.com
These easily identifiable moments bring about an instant connect with Rani – a role that Kangna portrays with ease and restrain. But remember it’s a full 2 and half hours of the same thing over and over again.
Kangna’s coming of age becomes all too familiar after a point and that’s where the story stops while scenes keep moving forward seemingly trying to evolve Rani into queen, which we all know is going to happen right from the beginning.
Director and part screenplay writer Vikas Bahl has attempted a plot full of infinite possibilities and that is overwhelming. The biggest plus is that most small town Indian stereotypes have been used, but the biggest drawback is that music, humor and shock value have been lacking, in that order.
If you’re content with a few moments and laughs then the Queen is waiting at a theater near you.
