We are brought up with certain ideals in mind. We should be honest, true to ourselves, sincere, hardworking and the world will reward us with riches for being good, doing good. What happens when such myths are shattered?
That is what the movie is about. It is about a talented poet who has written a book and has an ambition to see it published. He sees this pretty girl in school who reciprocates his advances. From a happy youngster, Vijay turns into a bitter young man when he finds that his books is not getting published. The publisher does not care for his talent, he will publish books only by famous established people. His girlfriend has married the rich publisher. The only one who understands him is a prostitute who loves him for his talent and sensitivity.
The loser poet finds himself shunned by all, his beloved, his family, his friends. His book is published by the prostitute, supposedly posthumously, and declared a bestseller. His brothers, the publisher, his friends talk about him with affection and are eager to be associated with him.
The poet reappears, dramatically, and rejects everyone, the fame, family and friends. He walks into the sunset with just the prostitute who was his true friend all along.
A deeply sensitive film that talks about degenerating values in the society.
The cast was superb. Waheeda Rahman, Guru Dutt, Rehman, Mala Sinha, Mehmood all give a career best performance. The music is everlasting, the lyrics meaningful. The cinematography is amazing, the best of the black and white era.
The movie is timeless, a precious classic to be viewed again and again forever !
