Pyaar ke Side Effects

Rahul Bose, Mallika Sherawat

This was one film I just HAD to see. Pyaar ke Side Effects starring the thinking man’s actor, Rahul Bose, and the Physical ?! / non-thinking?! man’s actress Mallika Sherawat.

An unlikely pairing? Not really. Pretty clever pairing, actually, because a lot of people I know have gone and seen the movie only to see if this pairing works.

And I have to say, it does.

The plot is pretty straight. Rich girl meets boy. Lust at first sight. They go steady. Love develops. She wants to get married. He doesn’t. The rest of the story is a series of events around the “why do women want to get married and spoil all the fun” theme. Ofcourse, there are also enough scenes to show why men should get married. And then in the end they get married and live happily ever after…..?!

Not a very original story. However, what does make the film watchable are the dialogues and characters. Rahul Bose, as the marriage shy bachelor is competent, though a bit wooden in parts. (One got the feeling that he was uncomfortable in some of the intimate scenes?). Ranvir Shorey, as his friend Nanu, is hilarious. But the real winner is Mallika Sherawat. She has more oomph in her little finger than any other heroine in Bollywood. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that the lady can act. As Trisha, the Punju girl from Delhi, she is funny, cute and endearing. She acts with a certain savoire fare which is nice to watch. I like the fact that she is completely comfortable in her own skin, happy doing what she is doing. And this comfort is what helps build the chemistry between her and Rahul Bose.

The story does sag a bit, especially in the second half. And some of the gags are pretty trite. The film sort of teeters on the brink of bawdiness, with some tacky and suggestive dialogues, especially when Sophie Choudhry puts in an appearance in the second half of the film. I think the director couldn’t decide between a slapstick, ribald comedy and a mature adult comedy.

Net result; it was a bit of both.

Intellectual movie of the year, this is NOT. What it is is a fun, timepass kind of film. Go watch it on a Saturday evening when you have nothing better to do. Go with friends and enjoy a good laugh together.
