Pureit Classic 23 Ltr Water Purifier Total Waste

I have recently relocated to a suburb outside Mumbai city in Mira-Bhayander area, where I get water supplied through tankers (yes, the tanker lobby is alive n kicking even decades after I first visited this  place). As the water is undrinkable even after boiling it and filtering it in the traditional steel filter with two candles, I thought of buying a 'modern' water purifier, like the Pureit Classic 23 Ltr Water Purifier, which boasts of clear odourless water.

Besides, it is supposed to save on LPG usage as it doesn't need boiled water as input. Besides, considering the long-term cost of getting a 15 or 20 ltr Bisleri can for home seems too high. But, within a week, I realized that the Pureit Water Purifier is a useless product and one is better off following the traditional method of boiling and filtering water in the good old water filter with candles.

Shall mention the pros and cons of the Pureit Classic 23 Ltr Water Purifier below -

Pros :-

  1. Well designed to make it look attractive (one reason I fell for it)

  2. Promises to clean water through multiple levels of filtering (bogus claims, refers Cons )

  3. Backed by an MNC - HUL - giving it the credibility it doesn't deserve

  4. Their Sales person called within an hour of inquiring with their Customer Care

  5. Can (should?) work with tap water, doesn't require boiled water

  6. Doesn't require continuous tap water (no plumbing) or electricity to operate,

  7. Pureit Classic Water Purifier is supposed to shut off filtering if GermKill Kit is not replaced as and when indicated in a section of the device.

Cons :-

  1. Water seems to pass through 3 levels of filtering too fast to assure 'pure' drinking water

  2. The filtered water retains bad odour of water - particularly of borewell / tanker water

  3. Operates using a proprietary GermKill Kit with 3 components sold as kit, not individually. Each GermKill Kit promises to filter 1500 ltrs before it needs to be replaced. Costs Rs. 450

  4. Poor after-sales service, as Salesperson visited within 2 hours, but no service person called / visited for 2 days after reporting complaint with their Customer Care

  5. The GermKill Kit containing 3 filtering components needs to be replaced after 1500 Ltr which will be indicated in the water purifier.

  6. The device installed in my house was of Nov'12 which means some of the filtering components may be nearing their validity period. Noticed 'grains' from carbon filter dropping into the filter which might end up choking other filtering components, and trigger their GermKill kit expiry indicator to turn 'red' forcing a premature replacement of kit.

After using this water (un)purifier for a week, I feel I was better off using the old candle-based water filter, as the Pureit Water Purifier seems no better and  costs a whopping Rs. 2350/- and is definitely not worth the price. Perhaps one should consider the RO tech based purifiers which offer safe odorless drinking water, but cost 4-5 times more.

Those having no constraints of continuous water supply may be better off with other purifiers like ones by Aquaguard, which I have used in my previous residences and they work fine.

Finally, as I have noted in other posts on Pureit Water Purifiers on Mouthshut, I don't expect Pureit team to respond, as this review / post doesn't quite appreciate their product. They have thanked and responded ONLY to reviews / posts which gave them +ve feedback. So much for tall claims about products and services by an MNC.
