The Great Ridley scott with movies like Blade Runner, Alien, Gladiator and Black hawk down comes back to his favorite science fiction genre after 30 long years with a magnificent, spell binding Prometheus. I haven't seen the original alien and don't know how good it was but tell you what..? This quasi prequel is definitely a cool mine trip..!
Scott creates a groundbreaking mythology in which a team of explorers goes in search for the origins of mankind to the darkest corners of the universe. In the year 2093, after discovering clues to the existence of a certain kind of extraterrestrial race archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway (Noomi Rapace and Logan Marshall-Green) set off on a voyage to the alien's supposedly home planet on board the starship Prometheus. Their mission funded by a billionaire called Peter Weyland involves finding out the origins of human race -- who created mankind and why.
Eventhough I'm a pushover for materials like this, scott's vision is vast and is definitely worth applauding especially for the brilliant visuals -- It's a welcome return to form. The highlight of the film of course is the gorgeous photography filmed in 3D is stunning to look at. There is a scene which showcases that -- Yes I'm talking about the scene where David, the fastidious android played brilliantly by Michael fassbender circles around a moving illusion of the universe created by the aliens -- It's a fabulous scene..!
The film echoes in plenty to many of the other films of the same genre -- Stephen spielberg's AI, James cameron's Avatar and especially Stanley kubrick's 2001: A space odyssey. The opening sequence the dawn of man sequence looks like it's inspired from Kubrick's movie.
The background score is haunting and just like in 2001 it's very apt for the mood of the film. What makes the trip even more entertaining are the performances. Most notable of the lot is Michael fassbender as David, the Fastidious android with hidden agendas -- David is the glue which holds the film together even when it loses its path and Fassbender pulls of the role with ease -- It's a performance worthy of an oscar nod -- what a fabulous actor..!! Noomi Rapace the original girl from Dragon Tatto also does a fine job and charlize therone is as good as ever..!
But the real star of the film is Scott himself -- He creates an eerie film, atmospheric and almost satanic one which James cameron hailed as one of his best works till date. And that's true.. Yeah, that's true.. . Everything said and done my only reservation with this film is that it doesn't really have all the answers to the big questions it poses but still then we have sequel waiting hopefullyin 2013. If you think everyone's gonna get off this ship alive you're at wrong movie. Hi.. Hi.. Jokes apart I'm going with 4 out of 5...!!
