Magic! It turns on a few and fools a few. But, what happens when 2 magicians
clash to outbeat each other? Thats exactly what'The Prestige' is about. Quite
frankly to say, this movie fooled me to the fullest. Revenge and Vengeance being
the core of the film, this movie has been one of the finest ever made!
The story.
Robert Angier and Alfred Borden are to apprentices working under Cutter(Michael
Caine). Both are good friends. Angier(Jackman) and his wife work together. It all
starts when both tie up Angier's wife for a trick which involves drowning the
lady inside water and bringing her back within a minute. The knots are of a
special type and Angier and Borden(Bale) are well-versed about the various types
of knots which the lady can free herself from. Borden argues with Angier that one
can come out of other types of knots too. Hence, he tries out a different knot on
Angier's wife for the trick. But, she struggles with the knot and drowns to
death. Borden reveals the fact that he experimented with a different knot.
Angier gets furious and decides to screw up the magic shows made by Borden. He
does this successfully by disguising and wrecking Borden's tricks. Borden hits
back by ruining Angier's shows. This goes on for a while. They finally decide to
settle the issue by deciding who the better magician is. The story twists and
twirls till the end. One cant be sure of which part becomes the climax!
Use of historic personalities like Nikolay Tesla has helped the film being
logical. The explanation given by Cutter for the successful performance of a
Magic trick with the Prestige part being the most important(the 3rd part of the
trick which involves reproducing the item which dissappeared!) signifies the
title of the film.
The contest between Angier and Borden goes so very deep that we are the ones
fooled in the end! One doesn't need to watch a Magic Show, watching Prestige is
much more than a Magic Show!
The movie also enlightens the sacrifice a magician needs to make to perform a
perfect trick.
The Music scores are excellent(but sound similiar to Batman Begins!) and the
sceenplay is lightning fast. This fact makes the movie a thorough entertainer.
Watch the Prestige and you feel like going on a Dark RollerCoaster Ride!
