Confusion paayo!

Slow pace, a story around human relationships(family), and one dimensional characters can work and work very well in movies like Vivah and other Rajshri gems. They had the charm to warm your heart and restore your faith in humanity.

The core elements in the previous movies were its simplicity and purity and the biggest strength was that they weren’t pretentious. They were just stories revolving around families and the characters fit according to the story. You could clearly say what the story was and what it wanted to tell and the way it was told. There was no confusion.

The problem with PRDP, is that you miss that charm, simplicity, and purity from frame one.  You know what’s going to happen at the end, five minutes into the movie. And there are half baked attempts at humor every once in a while. Except for Prem, you don’t understand/sympathize with any other character. The villain doesn’t do anything for 3/4ths of the movie and the songs just make your eyes droop. I have no problem with 6-8 songs, but when none of them are catchy or soulful, what’s the point?

Just when I feel a little interested to know what’s happening in the movie, a song breaks my interest. Very opposite of what happened in Hum Aapke Hai Kaun. The songs felt like an integral part of the movie and I did not mind them one bit.

Because the story is so weak, there is nothing to hold your interest. It’s only because of Salman Khan’s sincere performance and the fact that you have paid 300 Rs for the movie, you sit through it. Mr. Khan is endearing, earnest, and full of life as Prem. He manages to make you laugh, cry, and feel his love, but unfortunately, even that is not enough to engage the viewer completely.

In a way, PRDP, is similar to Jab Tak Hai Jaan. If you look at it objectively, you will not like the movie. But if you watch the movie being a fan of the male lead, you will like it.  It has just enough to please the fans but not please the non fans. You will try to search something in the movie if you are not swooned by the lead actor, and when you don’t find it, you get impatient.

Anupam Kher is fantastic in his role and the supporting cast is pretty strong. But then, they have nothing much to do since their back stories are so weak. And the antagonist is probably what the definition is not.(Spoiler: The way he dies is an insult to all the baddies out there.) And Sonam’s clothes add more to the scene than her.

Overall, Prem Ratn Dhan Paayo, will entertain you if you are a Salman Khan fan and it will bore you if you are not.
