IF YOUR IDEA OF A HOLIDAY IS TO BE ROBBED, CARJACKED, GANGRAPED, MURDERED, PERHAPS EVEN EATEN - then please do make your way to Papua New Guinea, one of the most violent and crime ridden societies on earth. Even worse is its capital - Port Moresby where tourists are advised, oh sorry let me rephrase that, not allowed to walk the streets or travel (by car) after sunset. There is basically nothing to see in Port Moresby. Ela Beach International School holds a crafts fair of tribal arts and crafts once a week, that's worth a look, but prices are not cheap. The parliament is built in the shape of traditional tribal meeting house. The town itself, is quite pretty, it sits on a hilly finger of land that juts into the Coral Sea, and the views are spectacular and the water is crystal clear, but let me warn you its not safe to swim anywhere in the city, not because of any dangerous marine life but because of the overfriendly locals who might just decide to discharge you of your wallet/valuables/life/etc. About two to three hours away is a National Park in the Owen Stanley Range, where during the 2nd World War Australian Soldiers attempted to fend off the Japanese from coming down onto the coast. The National Park is beautiful, but you'll need an armed escort to get there, and for the time that you actually spend there as well. The other 'attraction' is the resort island of Loloata in Bootless Bay outside Port Moresby, it is a bit shabby, and the beach isnt all that great, but the waters are clear and full of life. I wouldn't mind going back to Loloata, except ever since an incident with a German Tour Group who were robbed by bandits who had canoed out to the island, I am a bit weary.
