Port Louis is the capital city of Mauritius, and what a city it is!

Unlike many other cities around the world, Port Louis has a friendly and cosy atmosphere quite different from the busy sounds and shouting of major cities.

Port Louis sits on the west coast of Mauritius and it boasts some impressive architecture.

The city is extremely well looked after. If you see a piece of litter on the floor, you can bet that 5 minutes later it will be picked up.

History:

Port Louis was founded in 1736 by the French as a port for ships rounding the Cape of Good Hope to and from Asia and Europe. With the completion of the Suez Canal in 1869, the city's importance declined.

What’s there?

• Port Louis is a beautiful city to visit, and many tourists do go there, while in Mauritius. There is the main government building, where important decisions are made, and you can still see the iron model of Queen Victoria, in front of the building.

  
  




• There is the daily market. Here you can buy many things, including souvenirs to food and drink.

  
  




• There are casinos, and large shopping places to visit!

  
  




• You could take a walk by the waterfront, and see the boats harboured there.

  
  

Travel:

Even thought Port Louis is a capital city it’s a small one! - You can use the bus to travel in and around the city, and you can also use taxis. Or because Port Louis is reasonably small you could walk!

Shops:

If you like your shopping, you'll love Port Louis! - There are many shops for all tastes! There's even duty-free shops! You probably will not know that shops because they are just from Mauritius, but the quality is EXTREMLY HIGH!

Night life:

As I said, Port Louis is totally different from any other capital city I have visited. Port Louis doesn't have much of a night life (for the clubs you have to go to Curepipe or Quatre Borne - just a short ride from Port Louis) Port Louis is ideal for couples, who would like to walk down by the sea! (Very Romantic)

Hotels:

There are no hotels in Port Louis. The hotels are located on the coasts of Mauritius.
