Ponnusamy has been a restaurant we have been going for many many years to the Ponnusamy in Egmore, especially when our friends or relatives who are visiting us want to taste authentic tamil cuisine. Over the years, there have been many changes in the decor and menu.
However, one thing that has not changed at all is the quality of the food. It is very light on the pocket compared to some "authentic" chettinad restaurants. One important thing is that their quantity is also pretty good. It is a non-vegetarian spicy food freak's heaven.
One should not order the usual chicken or mutton dishes, not that they dont taste good, but you should try the rabbit, kadai, turkey and fish varieties. It tastes like how a favored grandmother or mother would prepare. The decor is pretty decent.
Not very suitable for corporate guests, but I have taken a couple of expats there and they really enjoyed the sura puttu and kadai fry. Of course, these guys are major foodies and more than the taste, the bill gave them a very pleasant surprise.
The service is also very friendly. There may be some days when they are really running around because of the crowd, but as far as I have noticed, they always service with a smile no matter how frazzled they are. Anyways, for those days, when you yearn for homely spicy food, this place will welcome you with open arms.
