The Bombay-Pune(BP) highway is a driver's paradise. It is a very picturesque highway and also smooth where you can drive with minimum use of brakes at a comfortable speed of 80-100 km/hr for most part(you can go higher if you want to take the risk).
But having driven on some northern highways too, especially NH-8(Delhi - Jaipur), I would say that Bombay-Pune highway has the following disadvantages:
Natural beauty also means trouble - I am not only saying that driving on hilly terrain can be more dangerous if you want to enjoy the natural beauty while being on the driver's seat! The drive becomes slightly more dangerous during monsoons due to land-slides and pot-holes on an otherwise beautiful road.
One-way traffic not throughout - The highway is not built in a manner that it provides one-way traffic throughout. i.e., the road doesn't provide proper road dividers throughout.
Lights - Night driving on the BP highway is dangerous, especially during monsoons and due to absence of one-way road(in parts) as the lighting on the highway is poor, for its standards.
Tyre - bursts: I haven't been able to fathom this one, but somehow several more cases of tyre-bursts are reported on the BP highway than even in Rajasthan.
Conclusion - A beautiful highway to drive on, a must drive I would say. Just avoid monsoons and night driving if your driving skills are not much to write home about!
