“Plays anything!! Including ROTIs!!” hahah

Thz what the advertisement says. I say most of the other players does the same, may be even better, they might even play dosas.

I’ve never been a big fan for Philips, even from the days of the great old “POWERHOUSE”.

Forget the old cassette player. Lezz switch back to the DVD player of Philips.

Shopping:

Check 1:

I wz looking out for a DVD-Player with the “standby” button which was digitally controlled.

Philips was the only player with a digitally control standby button.

Check 2:

What format can it support?

Oh well sir, it can play almost any format !! said the marketing guy.

So can I play a ROTI?

Don’t mind I wz jokin !!

DVD (ofcourse), VCD, MP3, AVI, JPG are few to mention.

And thaz more than enuf for me.

Check3:

I needed the Dolby / DTS 5.1 analog output. So that I need to only buy a 5.1 Amp.

Most of the models did support, except for the cheaper onez missed out.

Check4:

For Price pls do not go by the MRP printed on the box.

Get the discount on 50% value of MRP. The MRP was 14K (INR) So

U get it for 7K to 7.5K (INR).

People to try to fool around too much here

Check5:

Region, most people presume that DVD player can play any DVDs. Not everyonez aware of the region 1-7. This player is by default set to play Region 5.

But hey I got the trick to crack down this player to play all regions (Region 0).

Usage:

Display

No mp3 tags, IDs displayed on the panel, only the track number is displayed which doesn’t make much sense.

U need to switch on the TV to select the song.

Clarity:

DVDs (genuine ones) are built for it clarity, not comparable with VCDs.

Output:

Connect the 5.1 analog out put to the Amp and u are set with a HOME-THEATER,

Unless u have DVD which has 5.1 encoded movie within it.

Pls note to enable the 5.1 u need to “disable” the Digital out (3-D, surround etc) in the menu.

MIC

Mic option is useless!! Not many do karaoke

Menu driven

Menu is well organized, Need to be a bit more friendly, to switch back to previous menu.

I think I’ve done a lot of cribbing so far !!!

Now for some goodies:

Performance:

It’s been a year now that I’ve had not much problem in this system.

Luckily I did not get the drive problem (for those who used powerhouse which had the shutter problem which is the starting point for remaining parts get worn out).

Good error correction mechanism

Auto-switch off

Oh forgot to mention.. This is one good thing Philips has come out with.

At the end of the CD/DVD the player can switch off to standby.

(AS stated earlier the standby is digitally controlled, so even if the power fluctuates/bounces the DVD stays in standby, unlike the manual power buttons).
