Running time: 125 minutes

Stylish and ultra-kinetic, Pattiyal is an exciting and violent tale of a mute hit man caught in the familiar mechanisms of revenge.

Bharath is Selva, a mute and deaf man and Arya is Koshi the deadly duo of Chennai’s Slum bred Hitmen. When Koshi's girlfriend Saro (Padmapriya) is raped, he embarks on a journey of vengeance in which Selva will ultimately be involved.

Selva and Koshi aren't awful monsters, and the movie even develops a certain affection for them. They are killers just as they could be a normal human being. Koshi and Saro are the only compassionate human beings who gave him a chance until Selva meets a cute pharmacist (Pooja) with whom he falls in love. But as in all dramas fate will intervene.

The cast is convincing, especially Bharath who develops a childish innocence before exploding into acts of wild violence.

From the opening frame, where Chain of operations involved in executing a murder right from taking the order gets explained, the technically proficient style of the Vishnuvardhan’s direction grabs you with its endless zeal. Vishnu has a sure sense of directing. Sharp and edgy editing (Sreedhar Prasad), saturated colors(Nirav shah) and an omnipresent soundtrack (Yuvan shankar Raja) blending with the images create a visually stunning film.

Multiple filters and film stocks are used by cinematographer Nirav shah to great effect, particularly during the film's action sequences. Adding to the many visual flourishes is the catchy and often pulse-pounding soundtrack, which fits the film's mood perfectly.

And even though a the framework say major backbone of the movie is obviously lifted from acclaimed Thai movie – “Bangkok Dangerous”- Vishnu has been able to put a fresh spin on such retread material.

Cast-wise, the assembled actors pull off their parts without a fumble. Despite his unsavory profession, Bharath has a likable turn as Selva, and you end up rooting for him. The eye-catching Pooja is fine as the love interest, and she even manages to elicit a little chemistry with Bharath.

Finally, Arya and Padmapriya actually end up providing the film with much of its emotional weight as another pair of star-crossed lovers. One needs to admit Arya has grown leaps and bounds as an actor. His satirical one-liners are sure to bring the theatre down with applause.

Padmapriya is sharp in image and character wise contrast from her previous movie. She is a scene stealer in major episodes.

VMC Haneefa as Samy , Bala as Sappai, and rest other cast have performed their role well with special mention to Mohan Natarajan – his performance is menancing and brings chill to the spine.

Yuvan shankar Raja once again proves he is the worthy heir of Maestro Illaiyaraja. Songs and BGM are superb to the core.

With a strong previous effort like ''Arindhum Ariyamalum'' and a superb offering in ''Pattiyal'', Director Vishnuvardhan and Producer Geetha are certainly on their way to bigger and better things.

Verdict : Pattiyal – though a desi cousin of “Bangkok Dangerous” hits the Bulls eye.
