Ever seen a kids movie without cliches or without the kids actually behaving like kids( not the chacha ne chndni chowk se kind of irritatingly chweet kids).
Pasanga, I would say, is a rare gem of a movie. Consider this, the entire movie is dominated with Kids in almost all scenes, the director is a newby, the music director is only a movie old and all, I repeat, all the actors are starting their acting career with this movie(except one:).
Despite all this the producer, Sasikumar(of subramaniapuram fame) had the guts to put his money in this movie.
To be short, Pasanga is the story of an extremely intelligent kid who, due to his familie's economic condition, is forced to switch from Matriculation school to a corporation(state run) school in a town and another kid, who is the dada of the school and also happens to be the son of the class teacher. The two are poles apart in their past life, while one is studious and constantly craving for attention the other, while intelligent, is pretty notorious and garners attention for all wrong reasons.
What happens when these two poles are positioned opposite each other, will their rivalry ultmately blossom to friendship, what are the hardships each of these kids go through in their life, how their families treat them and how peer pressure and family pressure affects our kids is all that is stuffed in this movie.
A special mention needs to be made about the love pair that is shown in the movie. The guy is the studious boy's chithappa(father's bro) and the gal is the notorious boy's sister. The circumstances that lead them to fall for each other, their interactions and the fun surrounding them provide loads and loads of laughter. A special thanks to Pandiarajan(director) for using our daily spoiler, Mobile phone, to awesome use. Watch the movie, you will definitely agree.
Music for the movie is by James vasanthan, kindly read my review on subramaniapuram to know a bit more about him. The songs are excellent, sply the Love song(oru vetkam varudhe) and the family song(anbale azhagagum) will make you feel really green. Background score is sufficient and not overdone.
Camer work is vital to show a town in Tamilnadu the way it is. The Tamilnadu towns, as such, are very beautiful with closely stacked shops within the town area, Huge independent houses, the mud roads, the ponds, the corporation school all have their own nostalgic beauty. The camera man has ensured that the true beauty in them is definitely captured.
How tough would it be to control one kid in our own home? imagine how tough it would be to control and extract expressions from 10s and 20s of kids in each of the shots? Hats off to the director for having achieved this. The expressions of the kids seem all natural and it appears that the director has not forced expressions on them. The actors who have donned the role of the kids's parents have done exceptionally well, not to mention the effort of the love jodi, a great pair of flirts:)
Beyond all the laughter, the director has driven home a strong message. Parents, be supportive of your children, you dont realize how your domestic fights affect the children mentally and how it hinders their performance, directly and indirectly. Same way, teachers, be supportive and appreciative of what the students achieve, this is a great motivater. There are other few messages, both subtle and open, in the movie that you may notice.
Overall, an excellent kids movie that has to be watched by the entire family. If not for message, just go and have a laugh, iam sure the movie will take you back to your own school days.
