With great expectation, the audience awaited its release. After all, it is based on Saratchandra Chattopadhyay's literary masterpiece. Similar to that of Devdas. The father son relationship for example is also evident in this film. However, there is no comparison to be made. Even though it is based on a classic novel, the film is a slow descent downhill, with a few moments of excitement here and there, until eventually; even the climax itself can't redeem the film. Parineeta is a great looking film, set in 1962 in Calcutta; beautiful and vibrant it was called the 'Paris of the east'. It has good music, acting, and even produced and written by one of my favorite directors, Vidhu Vidod Chopra. However, walking out of the theater, I felt cheated, that I went to see a movie which had everything going for it, but ultimately it was given the same treatment as all the other bollywood hits like 'kuch kuch hota hai, kal ho na ho, Mujhse dosti Karoge and Na tum jaano na Hum, A love triagle! I really wanted to like this film, but the climax was a let down. Such an important moment in the film needs to be handled with care, but there are moments that are laughable because of the frivolous action, possibly due to editing. The best performance in the film was given by newcomer Vidya Balan, she commands each scene she is in and stays true to her character and her intentions. An unconventional beauty who is perfect for this role and era in which it takes place. I do give it credit for handling the love making scene with such care and attention. It is beautiful and even emotional when heard with the lyrics of the song, ' hui main Parineeta'. In that moment they declare their marriage, very touching, but great scenes like this are lacking in a film that demands greatness. There is a scene in the rain, in which the two characters that are speaking dont have a drop on them, while the others are trying to escape it. How could a mistake like that be over looked? There are a couple other instances of such inaccuracies. Rehkha's special dance number kaisi paheli zindgani is forgettable and silly. I dont know why she did it. Diya Mirza's character could've been etched out more, in fact she would be perfect doing Rehkha's bit. Sanjay Dutt and Saif Ali Khan also give powerful performances but Vidya Balan definitely takes the cake. Over all, the film lacks in entertainment value, I think the women in the audience might appreciate it more, since it has such strong female characters.
