First flying experience

You strap into the harness, position yourself with the risers in your hand and listen to your instructor’s last minute reminders. Now it’s just you and the wind along with that vague impression of a living

creature behind you seeming to wait for your command to take to the sky. You check the wind and your lines one more time and you realize everything is in perfect order. It’s time to commit aviation.

You feel excitement and just a little fear. That fear is natural for anyone performing what seems like an unnatural act for the first time. But you have been programmed for success by your instructor’s careful guidance, your reading and step by step practice. Your fear subsides as your self-confidence assures you tat you are ready. With a command “LIFT!” you propel yourself forward and look up to see your canopy inflating above you. A quick check proves everything is in order. You lean forward and accelerate the canopy to top speed by pushing on the risers with your ands or arms.

As you continue running you get lighter and lighter, then suddenly you are airborne! Bye now your hands are off the risers and holding the control toggles near your shoulders. You look around and can hardly believe you are flying. You don’t have much time for sightseeing though. The ground is coming back to greet you and it’s time to think about landing. You release the brakes for speed then give them a smooth full pull to stop the canopy and you land with a light step.

You collapse the canopy then look back with a grin at your take off. It isn’t all that far away, but it sure felt as if you soared like an eagle! “What a rush, ”  You think as you

gather the canopy for the trek back up hill. “I’ve got to do that again!” And you will, for all your preparation has rewarded you with the foundation to build your skills to a highly tuned level.

Welcome to the family of sky adventurers.
