Title : Heavenly Music

Review : Pakeezah is a classic hindi film..a film which you can see umpteen number of times and still feel awestruck by its sheer opulence and grandeur!!Great films usually have great timeless music barring of course a few exceptions...like SHOLAY and DEEWAR..very ordinary music in memorable films..Pakeezah falls in those categories of films;its music is simply superb. The music was given by the immensely talented but neglected composer GHULAM MOHAMMAD.Each and every song of Pakeezah creates a mesmerising effect on its listeners.

The songs are basically based on classical indian ragas with a lot of traditional indian musical instruments like shehnai, sarangi, tabla extensively used which tarnsports you to a bygone era..when time moved ever so slowly and when grace and elegance was the order of the day.. This is one movie which Lata Mangeshkar must be proud of as a playback singer..The soundtrack is dominated by her dulcet, honey sweet voice..Be it the playful ''Inhi logon ne'' or the wonderful ghazal ''Chalte Chalte'' or the pathos inducing ''Teere nazar dekhenge''...her voice blends majestically with the syruppy tunes of Ghulam Mohammad. When you hear lata crooning ''Mausam Hai Aashiquana'' you can close your eyes and see lovely green pastures, cascading glistening waterfalls and smell pine-scented forests..

Personally the track I like best in the movie is the duet ''Chalo dildar chalo'' sung by lata and the great Mohd. Rafi..The song has splendid lyrics by Kaifi Azmi...''Zindagi Khatm bhi ho jaye agar...Zindagi Khatm bhi ho jaye agar..Na kabhi khatm ho Ulfat ka safar...Chalo dildar chalo..chand ke paar chalo..'' WOW....Lata sings the bulk of the song with Rafi just singing the ''chalo dildar chalo, chand ke paar ke chalo'' part of the song but he complements lata admirably. The song has a kind of far-away,dreamy effect like its actually being played far far away..in the distance....somewhere on the moon..

Albums like Pakeezah are not made everyday..be it the orchestration of the songs or the sheer melody of them..they are bound to haunt you..FOREVER... CHEERS
