When a Shah Rukh Khan film hits the theatres, there are very high expectations from it and this time too, people have very high expectations from his latest film ”Paheli”.The film`s trailers promised that this one would be a different film from the usual Bollywood and SRK films. This film has SRK playing a ghost,a role he has never done earlier.SRK`s moustaches look in this film has also been very much appreciated by his fans.Other than that, the film also stars the current Bollywood queen,Rani Mukherji, who has had two hits earlier this year (”Black” and ”Bunty Aur Babli”) and we all know that all her films with SRK are hits. So,this is one of the ost awaited films of the year.Does it live upto the expectations that one had from it?

Red Chillies Entertainment. ”Paheli”,directed by Amol Palekar, stars Shah Rukh Khan,Rani Mukherji,Anupam Kher,Neena Kulkarni,Rajpal Yadav,Aditi Govitrikar,Amitabh Bachchan (in a cameo),Suniel Shetty (special appearance) and Juhi Chawla (in a special appearance). This film has been produced by Shah Rukh Khan`s “Red Chillies Entertainment”.Where his last two films as a producer,”Chalte Chalte” and ”Main Hoon Na”,were box-office hits, will this one succeed too?

”Paheli” is a story which is set in Rajasthan, and takes the viewers about thousands of years back.It tells us about a love story which took place in the severe heat of that desert area.It tells us the story of a girl called Laachi (Rani Mukherji),who is getting married to Kishan (Shah Rukh Khan).Laachi who was very much excited about her wedding feels disappointed when she finds out that her husband,Kishan is a very money-minded person, who is not at all interested in her.Kishan is very much like his father,Bhanwar Lal (Anupam Kher),who is a very successful trader. On their wedding night,Kishan doesn`t pay any attention to Laachi and instead thinks of his business matters and his 5 year business journey, for which he has to leave the next day.Lachi feels very sad that she has got a husband who doesn`t love her at all and who is leaving her alone for 5 long years, but little does she know that this is exactly when her life is going to take a beautiful turn.Laachi is unaware of the fact that a ghost has fallen in love with her,who will make life turn into heaven for her.On her wedding night, when Laachi was going to her in-laws a ghost had seen her and had fallen in love with her. When he gets to know that her stone-hearted husband is leaving for 5 years,he does not miss this opportunity of making Laachi fall in love with him.The ghost then, transforms into Kishan and goes to Laachi`s house.Laachi thinks that her husband is back and cannot even think that it is actually a ghost whom she thinks is her husband. The ‘new’ Kishan gives lots of love to Laachi and fulfills all her dreams. Both the lovers spend beautiful moments together and then the ghost-turned-Kishan Lal feels that it is high time and he should tell Laachi about his truth. When Laachi comes to know that the one whom she is romancing with is actually a ghost, she is initially shocked but without any hesitance accepts this fact.It is actually true love what Laachi wants, whether she gets that love from a human being or a ghost.Later,Laachi gets pregnant with Kishan`s (the ghost) child in her womb.In the meantime,Kishan (the ghost) also satisfies the wants of Kishan`s family. He goes onto earn a lot of money and profits for Bhanwar Lal,through his magic and supernatural powers. The ghost handles everything so well, that nobody ever gets suspicious about his true identity but the story now takes a turn.5 years pass by and the original Kishan is back in town. The whole village is shocked to find out tow Kishans and they don`t know whether who is the real Kishan.Everyone is confused.A pregnant Laachi also gets worried because she does not want the ghost`s identity to be revealed nor does she want him to go away from her life. The real Kishan tells Laachi that he also loves her a lot but Laachi does not believe him.The existence of two Kishans becomes a riddle for everyone in the village and whom should she choose among the two Kishans becomes a riddle for Laachi. At this point, comes a shepherd (Amitabh Bachchan),to solve this riddle. He puts forward three tests for both the Kishans and whoever succeeds in passing these test is the real Kishan and the one who really loves Laachi. What will happen now? Will everyone accept the ghost? Will Laachi and the ghost be able to spend their lives together? And what about the real Kishan?

Shah Rukh Khan comes back in a double role with this film, after ”Duplicate”.I must say that the actor has portrayed the role of both the Kishans very well.As the money-minded and the more practical Kishan,he is really fantastic because he portrays that role in such a way that any woman would hate him and he handles the role of the ghost equally well,in such a way that any woman would love him. Here SRK does not only romance and flirt like in all other films of his,but he tries to be different and he definitely succeeds. This performance will be loved by his fans!

Rani Mukherji is one of the best actresses Bollywood has today and she proves this thing, yet again. The actress does quality work and her work shows that she is very selective about the films she does. All her films are big films, with big stars and directors and the icing on the cake is that she performs brilliantly in all her films. As Laachi also, the actress shines and gives a performance which will definitely be nominated in the Best actress category,in various award functions, due to be held next year.

Anupam Kher also does an excellent job as Kishan`s father but the one who really is the best amongst the supporting artistes in this film is definitely Rajpal Yadav. His comedy is wonderful and it will definitely evoke lots of laughter.Neena Kulkarni and Aditi Govatrikar are just about alright in their small roles.Suniel Shetty and Juhi Chawla who are playing the role of a couple have small roles but they also perform well and add to the star value of the film. They have heir own track in the film, which has nothing much to do with the storyline of the film.Amitabh Bachchan as the shepherd,in a cameo is wonderful and no other actor could have been so effective in this role,as Big B.Though, some people will feel that the actor should do lengthy roles and avoid such cameos,I think that watching him in this role is a welcome relief from the usual “goody-goody father” roles he plays in almost all his films.

Amol Palekar is someone whome everyone respects in Bollywood because he is a very sensible actor and director, too. His direction for this film has been handled very cleverly.Had this film been given to some other director,he would have made this film look very unrealistic but Amol Palekar has made this film in a very realistic manner.
