I know I cannot be sued for writing a review for a movie, but I almost get a similar feeling while drafting this one, because this movie was a landmark even before it was released. And I feel scared as if people are going to turn against me and howl at me for criticising it. Although lately it seems I put on my over critical glasses while watching any movie, judging by the kind of Hindi movies being released, you don’t really need to have those critical glasses on – the movies on their own throw up enough loopholes and negative points that affect what you feel eventually for the movie as a whole.

Paa is a story of a 12 yr old kid suffering from “progeria”. a disorder which makes a person’s body age faster than usual. So our main character named Auro is 12 yrs old but his body is like much much older, and as you might have guessed he does not have much time left. He is going to die soon, which would be a predictable end to the movie.

This is Balki’s second film. If the first one was called chini kam, this one should have been titled chini zyada. It’s just too sweet. That is the movie’s biggest problem. All the characters are just too sweet all the time and after one point in time it gets on you and you stop enjoying the movie. Firstly there are Auro’s school mates who are always too nice to him. quite impossible really. In reality a kid so weird looking would die of inferiority complex if he enters any school. Especially the character named Vishnu, who is auro’s best friend of sorts, really comes across as an extra smart-alec who although cannot figure out basic algebra, but comes up with amazingly witty comments about his dad. For example “Main aur mere papa dono left handers hain. Woh left hand se marte hain main left side se khata hun*” Really funny at times, but hard to digest. I think this is a trend with Balki’s movies. In cheeni-kam, there was a similar character called sexy, who was over smart and unrealistically witty. On the same lines, Auro’s character also is shown to be just too intelligent and far too smart to relate. The extent of wisdom that he shows in the movie is crazy. too sweet and at times cheesy.

What I disliked most was that the movie overall had a very strong touch of south Indian Films – like the editing in scenes which appear one after the other in fast pace.

Basically there is no great depth in the story of the film and what the director has ended up doing, is try and weave a story around the character Auro. There is a political angle in the story which is irrelevant & non-interesting. It is more like a Rajnikant film where the overly honest hero does a lot of social good and brings peace and prosperity to poor people in his country. I don’t know whether this whole thing was scripted so that Abhishek Bacchan gets some on screen time or whether he sees a potential career in UP politics after he retires from films. how he uses DD News to expose the real morality of press workers fits a Rajnikant / Kamala Hassan flick better.

So the movie is actually a light, average mildly funny entertainer that only has one very huge memorable thing. Amitabh Bacchan’s performance. His acting in the movie is so unbelievable that I don’t think he will be able to eclipse this performance even playing a normal human being. And for that and that alone, this movie has achieved a legendary status. If it was not for the over smart dialogues and his predictable shoulder and hand gestures, you could not tell whether it really was AB under the make-up.

So watch this movie because of Auro and Auro alone. and Vidya Balan who has looked sizzling HOT even if she wears kamwali type saris throughout the movie.

Overall if you missed it, I’d say, you didn’t miss much.

PS: AB does a funny monkey dance throughout in the movie. Anybody care to explain the context of the dance and where he picked it up? Probably just a gimmick stunt developed last minute.
