Jet yes; Lag no!
Aug 19, 2007 10:59 PM 4323 Views

Jet lag is caused by disruption of body's inherent rhythms. In layman’s terms this happens because of crossing time zones disrupts the body clock resulting in our staying wide awake and feeling hungry at say 3 am in the night or dozing off at 4 pm in the afternoon while attending an important meeting. Here are some useful tips to overcome jetlag.

  1. Find out the destination time zone and try to reset your lifestyle according to that well in advance (2 or 3 days) of the journey. Keeping two watches set at different timezone helps. Try to take a sound nap in the afternoon and adjust your nightly sleeping time by 2 to 3 hours.

  2. As soon as you board the plane, reset your watch according to the destination time zone and eat and sleep in accordance to the time at your destination.

  3. Keep yourself well hydrated  - drink around 250 ml of water per hours flight time try and stay away from tea , coffee and alcoholic beverages, as these drinks dehydrate the body even more. More importantly, please remember that 1 alcoholic drink in the flight is equal to 2 on ground , which will leave you feeling even worse when you alight.

  4. Avoid sleeping pills because such medications make you sleep the whole duration in awkward positions which increases the risk of blood-clots and leave you drowsy upon waking up.

  5. The easiest way to stave off jet lag is by flying either first or business class. So if you are a frequent flyer, please check your frequent flyer miles and see if next time you can get an upgrade.

These are very simple and practical tips and I hope you find them useful.
