Orkut - a social menace. Review on Orkut

Orkut is at the threshold to celebrate its 3rd birthday and see what has it done to the Indian society at large. More than a social networking site it has become a platform for sexual transactions on net. I was taken aback to find in the recent researches that it has more than 533 communities catering to such subjects. To top it all, the transactions are happening openly without any fear of law.

The communities are filled with gory pictures and scraps that surely reflect the depleting human values. Who is to be blamed for all these things, aren't we some or the other way responsible for the kind of outlook that looks upon such tender issues as taboo. Since sex is considered a taboo, people are looking alternate ways to get indulged into it.

Though the whole transaction method is personal, it is found that exchange of e-mail IDS and exchange of numbers is rampant and people don't shy away. Another shocking revelation is that the people who are into such activities are coming from affluent families with no dearth of money. However, very few people have excuses saying that if somebody teaches me salsa then I will become your slave and will dance to your tunes. Does that ring a bell somewhere? Yes, it does. When people have money then why don't they go and spend it on a good dance teacher than to get involved in these demeaning activities and bringing bad names to themselves and the entire nation.

There are many communities dealing with gays and not to forget they are doing very well. The pictures posted are no way decent, on the contrary they break all the rules laid by the cyber-crime branches. Of late there had been cases wherein snaps of many ladies were morphed to create fake accounts to spoil their names and reputations.

Recently when I did a story with one of my friends for a daily, the response was overwhelming. The crime branch got in touch with center asking to ban the site and amend the IT act but again to no avail. The whole thing fell on deaf ears. It did create ripples but not enough to shake the entire society and nation at large.

Why to go so back, just few days back Rave Party was cracked in Pune and by now most of us might be knowing that the invitations to the party were flashed through networking sites and Orkut was one among those. I don't understand as why the government sitting quietly, I don't vote against the site but initiatives should be taken to educate the masses so that such events don't happen in future. It keeps the morals and Indian roots at stake.

It's a matter of great concern for the parents since many teenagers as well are there enrolled in the site. Why do people use networking sites for these purposes? I hope this is an alarm enough to wake the sleeping souls so something could be done on time than to repent later on.
