Unlike popular instant messengers, you needn't know someone's email id to interact with him/her. Just knowing the name of the person is enough or you can even interact with a complete stranger via scraps (similar to offline messages, but available for public viewing) or in communities' discusiion boards. By joining orkut, you've opened up a whole new workd where it is poissible to keep in touch with good friends, get to know acquaintances better and also establish contact with perfect starangers. You can also join communities of stuff you believe in or you like and meet peopel who share your views. Almost every school/ college/ universityu has its alumini community and so keeping in touch with your old mates was never this easy. All this comes at a price though. Although almost everyone knows about the merits of this social networking site, the devils in this "phenomenon" of sorts are largely unknown:
- No Privacy
Even a compeket starnger can check your scrapbook, videos, photo album and profile. Hence, posting confidential and sensitive information is inconvenient.
- Perversions
Orkut also encourages perversions due to the setting up of free profile pages. People indulge in all sorts of unappreciatied and filthy activities on the net. Plagraism, indecency and violatioon of a person's right to secrecy are often made here.
- Nuisance Of Starngers
Starngers constantly asking to be friends on a site like this is usual. Thsi is experienced more by the female tribe and I'm sure they'll be able to tell you all about it.
BUT all in all, the site has more advantages than disadvantages. Yes, it is addictive. But simply too great an invention for you not to be a part of it.
