Push-to-Talk (PTT) is the latest technology positioned to become the next ?killer app? in the wireless market. The wireless players had to wait for a long time since the last application ''SMS'' that turned out the tables on the revenue front.
Yes this is the same application launched by Orange and now Tata Indicom is on the brim of launching it. Hutch has been advertising it a lot, you remember the ad where the guys tumbles off the bicycle and the girl presses a button on her mobile phone & shouts for help and a group of people turn out for help.
In US market for carriers that have already deployed, PTT has proven itself a formidable tool, capable of increasing ARPU and attracting widespread adoption. There has been much debate, however, as to how to most effectively implement PTT in order to realize its full market potential.
What is Push to Talk all about?
A Walkie-Talkie / 2-way Radio type service that provides simple communication with the touch of a button. A Push to Talk capable handset and subscription to Push to Talk is required for both the originating and terminating parties.
The handset should have the PTT facility before you can use it.There is currently one handset available, the Motorola V60p. Other handsets will be available later.
While you are using your Push to Talk service, you will not be interrupted if another person tries to call you. Incoming regular voice calls will go directly to your voice mail and will be in your call log. You will not notice a change during your Push to Talk call.
This kind of application is of great use to the business which have a huge sales and support force. The Sales manager and reach to his entire sales force on a push of a button.
Doesn't it all sound interesting.
But still there are questions which needs to be answered.
How would the service providers charge their subscribers?
Will it be bulk minutes thrown away as freebee along with the launch subscription?
Come up with per min or a per second billing format?
Who is going to pay both the parties or the party that initiated the PTT call?
