Opus is Goa in true style. Open and airy, with swaying palms and a pebbled garden, which opens up, into an amphitheatre; it is witness to live performances all through the week- well almost! Owned by Carlton and Gina, Opus is a good break from the glitzy, smoke filled nightclubs and pubs and is a great hub for the creatively inclined, be it performances of music, dance or stand up comedy.
Located near the Mount Carmel College, it maybe a little off the way for the MG Road, Church Street loyalists, but its worth the drive and you will certainly not regret the decision. It is one of the places you can hang out with friends, listen to good music and have a great time, strum a guitar which is lying around, play a few rounds of scrabble or just lie on the bean bags strewn around and star gaze, as that is the roof above.
The place can easily accommodate a 100 people in its courtyard is often a common ground for private or corporate parties. Sundays are karaoke nights, and a hell of a lot of singers emerge… Some can be heard croaking while some sing away to glory putting to shame Bryan Adams and Whitney Houston. The jackpot would be if you hear Carlton perform on the one of the nights.
The food is largely Goan, with a few stray dishes added on. The starters are a huge hit here, with the ‘Bacon and cheese wrap’ topping the list. The stuffed mushrooms, fried prawns and Goan sausages are especially good. While the dessert menu does have the celebrated Bibinca apart from some other yummy confections.
The service maybe a little laidback, true Goan style again but thank god they don’t have the siesta in between! On a packed house things do get a little haywire and it might be a while till you get your drink in hand. The good thing to do will be to grab the mike and sing along on a karaoke night or swing along to the ‘Maria Pitashe’- a favourite Opus ever day song.
Opus does have entry charges on certain nights when there is a performance due. It is advisable to check the schedule, call and make reservations before dropping in to this lovely Goan shack.
