(I realized that a few die-hard SRK fans bombed me with their emails so I am being less critical of the movie, editing my review and highlighting a few god things too about it, but at the same time I am trying to be honest with my criticism)
The movie is loud right from scene one with over acting and plagiarism spread all over.
Sitting through the first half is terrible where the story moves not an inch and all you ses is a poor reproduction of the past, the 1970s that looks more like a mockery(as directors one could see a lot of hollywood movies(made in this decade) where the past is depicted with a wonderful subtlety and where the characters just blend with time).
HOWEVER - Must appreciate the technical guys who gave some wonderful special effects on a few occasions in the movie - listing a them here:
- The opening shot when the'young' Rishi Kapoor is shooting for Karz, in the 1970's.
(probably inspired from the special effects in Forrest Gump? anyway well done!)
The burnt down set of the studio - really looks very real and cinematography is very good.
Pulling all the stars in the filmfare awards is quite a spectacle - filmy MASALA at its best with Akshay Kumar and Abhishek Bacchhan bringing some much needed funny moments.
(I guess that Akshay's and Abhishek's few minutes of presence were more appealing than the overacting of the lead stars in the entire movie, and the melange of stars for a few minutes were the only consolation of buying an expensive ticket in a muliplex and spending a few hours!)
Shahrukh-Shreyas partenship falls flat with Shreyas looking dull. Come on Shreya - Where's the punch, you've been better?!
After the claptrap of the poorly depicted 1970's is over the second half is fully predictable, rebirth of the son whose mother has always been waiting for him, and the hero comes back to life to finish off the villain, the story is an insult to imagination and shows total lack of creativity.
Surprisingly of all the much hyped movies that I decided to see on the first weekend, one I expected the least to impress - Jab We Met turned out to be a winner with its simplicity, sense of humour and stellar performances by all artists.
Its better NOT to waste money on "Om Shanti Om" if you are a die-hard SRK fan, watch it on DVD(better borrow that too if you can!)
