There was just one expectation from the movie, when I went to see this Farah Khan movie – complete entertainment for 3 hours. OSO perfectly delivers on this account. Apart from brilliant choreography, direction which was expected from a Farah Khan movie, the director makes sure that you are kept entertained all the time. Om Shanti Om is a film from the home production of Shahrukh Khan(Producer – Gauri Khan).

Plot

This story is of Om and Shanti. Om Prakash Makhija(Shahrukh Khan) is a junior artist aspiring to become a superstar one day and live life of luxury and comfort. He is a diehard fan and a secret lover of popular actress Shanti Priya(Deepika Padukone). His mother(Kirron Kher) and Papu(Shreyas Talpade) are the only true believers of his talent.

Om saves Shanti’s life at a fire accident during shooting. From there on they start meeting often. Om gets madly in love with Shanti and one day he gets to know that she is married to and loves  producer Mukesh Mehra(Arjun Rampal) and she is pregnant. Mehra wants to make a film with Shanti titled Om Shanti Om and his money is at stake. Mehra had other plans in his mind he takes Shanti to the sets of his film and kills her by setting the studio on fire. This scene is shot brilliantly. When the opulent set is set to flames, it leaves you wide-eyed and awe-struck.

Om is the sole witness of this incident. He is injured badly by Mehra’s men while trying to save Shanti. He almost succeeds but unfortunately he dies and is taken to hospital by Rajesh Kapoor( a duplicate of Rajesh Khanna in the film).

In the second half, SRK is reborn as Om Kapoor and is a star. He meets Mukesh Mehra now Mike(now into Hollywood) at a party. He decides that he would Mehra to confess his crime and Om shanti om is remade. Om finds a Shanti lookalike Sandy during the auditions. No, she is not a reborn type! There is still more to the movie. Let me leave some suspense for you to watch the movie. The ending of the movie is spectacular!

Experience

Although the plot might seem to be a very serious one, but the way it is executed keeps you thoroughly entertained all the time.

That the film is a hearty tribute to the cinema of 1970s becomes clear from its opening scene – Rishi Kapoor, all dressed in silver, dances to the song “Om Shanti Om” from Subhash Ghai’s film Karz.

The first half of the film is simply superb. The tongue-in-cheek spoofs on the superstars of the 70s – be it Manoj Kumar, Dev Anand or Dharmendra – are extremely funny. The first half with the 70s backdrop is as much a visual treat as it is a laugh riot. If the initial portions are laced with humour [the premiere of ‘Dreamy Girl’, the Manoj Kumar episode, Ghai directing Rishi on ‘Om Shanti Om’ song, et al].

The second half doesn’t see much revival of the love story, but it does pack in a good dose of suspense and drama as the reincarnated Om Kapoor recalls his previous life in flashes and sets out to complete the story left incomplete in previous life.

In OSO, Shah Rukh Khan proves that he isn’t a superstar for nothing. His acting in the movie borders on a deliberate, filmi histrionic, in keeping with his character.

Deepika Padukone is very photogenic and she emotes well too. Arjun Rampal ’s brilliant portrayal of a cunning producer is surprising. Rampal is terrific in the film’s second half, when the ugly past catches up with his character. SRK fans would not like to read this, but in many scenes Arjun actually dominates SRK.

Music

The duo of Vishal and Shekhar  have composed brilliant music. Each of the seven unique tracks bring on a variety that makes Om Shanti Om a winner all the way. In the beginning one gets to hear a rather serene ‘Aankhon Mein Teri‘ which turns out to be an extremely soulful hear.

Well, those who love the dance numbers coming from Vishal-Shekhar don’t have to wait for long with the arrival of ‘Dard-E-Disco‘. This is the very track which is much talked about for Shahrukh Khan’s ‘perfect-six-abs’. Unlike songs in other moview, these songs do not break the continuity and flow of the movie, and fit in seamlessly in the movie script. Om Shanti Om is easily one of the most complete scores by Vishal-Shekhar and Javed Akhtar.

Technicals

Farah Khan has a very unique style of filmmaking. She follows no set formula and is not afraid to try anything and everything wacky just for the sole purpose of providing entertainment. Apart from the content, OSO is also a technically sound film. The cinematographer doesn’t try too many stylistic shot compositions but yet captures the gist of the story. The editing by Shirish Kunder is slick and tight. And the special effects – transposing Deepika Padukone with the likes of Sunil Dutt, Rajesh Khanna and Jitendra – are of super quality.

All in all a complete entertainer. Dont try apply logic to every scene in the movie, otherwise you would come out grumbling out of the theatre. Watch it like a bollywood movie and I gurantee your paisa vasool:)
