VISHAL SHEKHAR AT THEIR BEST

Grab a copy today** Ok…I have been a stalker on this forum for quite some time now But I just listened to the Soundtrack of Om Shanti Om and could not help myself but post this review…so here goes my first post

The songs are in the order they appear on the CD…

Ajab Si – KK has been going through a golden patch for a couple of years now. After struggling for a long time to make his mark on the music scene he has been belting out hits after hits. And he continues this run with Ajab Si. A brilliantly composed romantic song that actually reminds you of A R Rahman - thanks to the underplayed guitar that starts off the song and the accompanying arrangement that gently rises and falls as the song progresses.

Dard-E-Disco – A quintessential “item” song, DeD is superbly cheesy. And that is a good thing. Sukhwinder Singh is in good form as he belts out this dance track with solid gusto. This song is the ultimate tribute to the times we live in. The lyrics by Javed Akhtar are cheesily brilliant (ok…I have used cheesy twice for this song but that’s the only way to describe it). Just at the start of the Antra as you think that the Urdu lyrics give it a kind of classy feel undeserving for a song like this, it brings it back down with the New York, LA, San Francisco bit. Superb work Javed Saab. I don’t think Javed Saabs work in a song like this will get noticed but it should.

Deewangi Deewangi – The starting tune (that is used in the promos) hooks you completely and from then on it just never lets you go. The vibrancy and the youthfulness in this track is quintessential Vishal Shekhar and something that I doubt could be managed by any other music composer out there. Shaan completely takes over this track while Udit, Shreya and Sunidhi give him ample support. And Farah keeps her promise she made to the Indian Idol contestant Rahul Saxena as he gets to sing a couple of lines.

Main Agar Kahoon – Its very hard to dissect and think objectively about a song that is perfect. And this song is definitely PERFECT. If you have been a fan of the evergreen Mohammed Rafi classics such as “Maine Poocha Chaand Se” or “Yeh Reshmi Zulfe” then this song is definitely for you. Sonu Nigam who claims to the biggest fan of Mohammed Rafi is a perfect choice for a song like this and boy does he deliver here. At the end of his career if a list of top ten songs by Sonu is made, this song should find a prominent place on that list. Shreya Ghoshal provides the perfect foil for Sonu.

Jag Soona Soona Lage – One Sufi song in every album has become a norm these days. But this song by Richa Sharma and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan does stand out in the clutter. The song starts out well with Richa Sharma singing in the tune of the theme track and from then on it’s the Rahat Fateh show all the way. You truly end up feeling the pain conveyed by him in the song. Brilliantly written by Javed Akhtar this situational song should appeal to the lovers of good music

Dhoom Tana – If DeD was cheesy, then this song is cheeky. The song starts out with the sound of dhols and ghungroos so typical of the late seventies. You can almost imagine Jeetendra running around Sridevi as assorted dancers holding pots hover around them. This song could not have been managed without the inputs of Pyarelal and getting him on board is truly a master stroke. Just as you begin to get into the rhythm of this song, it suddenly turns on its head and becomes a rock’n’roll number. And then it again changes track and gets back to the original tune. In between if you do listen closely, you pick up the rhythm of the badminton song from Humjoli “Dhal Gaya Din”. Shreya Ghoshal is just perfect for a song like this and Abhijeet is an inspired choice. You do wonder why a superb singer like him does not sing more often though.

Daastan-E-Om Shanti Om – If you have been a fan of songs such as Ek Hasina Thi from Karz, then this song is just for you. The song that gives out the story of the whole film, it is brilliantly sung by Shaan who truly outdoes himself. If you think he was good in the Don title track then you have to just listen to this one. The arrangements are typical opera arrangements and that gives the song a larger than life feel. The tune itself is based on the theme tune of Om Shanti Om which is haunting to say the least.

A special mention also to the Om Shanti Om theme piece that is played out on the piano to close out the soundtrack. A superb end to a superb album.

Vishal-Shekhar take a bow. You have really turned it on this time. Initially when Rahman was dropped and Vishal-Shekhar came on board I was a bit apprehensive. I mean Rahman is a big big loss. But when I heard that the film is based in the seventies then I had absolutely no doubt that VS were truly the men for the job. I had no doubt that the work done by them for Jhankaar Beats where they had to really get into seventies music would stand them in good stead. And these guys have truly delivered. Its difficult to deliver under such immense hype. You just have to look at last years Dhoom 2 as an example. The soundtrack there was disappointing to say the least. Well don’t expect the same here. This and Johnny Gaddar are easily the best soundtracks of the year and none of the other soundtracks come even close.

PS: I know this is a really loooooooong review….but I just couldn’t help it guys (and gals of course).
