"The old Man and The Sea" is a great book and the writer "Ernest Hemingway's" really deserved a Prize for it and it came with nothing less than a Nobel Prize. Great. An excellent book in all ways.
This is my 3rd review and I am giving it 5 out 5, just as my two previous reviews, not my fault, I always get to read books which deserve 5 :)))
I read almost all 9 reviews for this book on this site before going for it bcoz' I read a bit of "Men without Women " by same writer and was not very impressed, infact I left the book without a second thought . I didn't knew it has only 99 pages and when I bought it I was wondering what will be there in just 99 pages, but now my answer is "Not everything but something is there for all of us which is beyond the explanation of the words."
There are not much characters in the book, infact there is almost only one character if we leave the first few pages and the last few one. The main character is The Old man named "Santiago" is a fisherman and there is a boy named "Marolin" who has learnt fishing from the Old man. Since the Old man has not fished anything for the last 84 days, the parents of the boy didnot allow the boy to fish with the old man, So the old man fishes alone now, but there is a bond of love and affection between the two, and the boy helped the old man in all possible ways.
On his 85 day he decides to fish something big so he goes far out in the sea, and he finally catches a big one on that day, and thats where his difficutlies begun. He spents almost 2 days in the sea, alone, and finally manage to kill the fish and starts his journey back, but in the way back he has to fight with lots of Sharks before he reaches his home. What happens in the end is for you to find out. :)
While in the sea, the old man keeps talking to himself, the fishes, his hands, The GODS and everything he can talk to, and at times he himself is the narrator of the story. This part is very humrous and also very inspiring and it impressess the most, its very difficult to portray such emotions and the writer has done it beautifully and excellently, Hats off to him. Great work.
So go for it, you will really enjoy the book, 100% recommendation from my side.
Some of the lines which I like are.
The boy says to old man, "you are my alarm clock."
"Age is my Alarm clock", old man replies, "You know why old people always rise early in the morning?, because they want their days to be as long as possible."
First you borrow and then you beg.
The book is full of such meaningful lines, so grab one and I know you will finish it in a day :)
Take Care and Keep Smiling.
