Is Bengali food all fish? Not really. Well, I used to think so too until I first visited Oh Calcutta. Haven’t really had the chance to go to the place again. But my first experience was good enough. I had the chance to taste everything vegetarian on the menu.

Located in South Mumbai.. Oh Calcutta is more a tradition than a restaurant. It has been part of the Mumbai-bengali culture for years now. And is a favourite haunt of not just the I-miss-Kolkatta-food Bengalis but even non-bengalis … the true food lovers.

Although fish and sea food is their speciality, there is some awesome vegetarian food served in the house as well.

I tried most of the vegetarian dishes and believe me it tasted like nothing that I have ever had at home or in any of the restaurants outside.

Even the fried potato chips have a different style of preparation and they are yummy. No one can eat just one – literally.

The starters range from potato fingers (as I mentioned already – can’t seem to get them out of my head and of the review) to brinjal to mixed vegetable delights.

And for the main course it is imperative to have the dal with rice. Since Bengalis after all are rice fanatics. The dal too comes in various varieties of taste. And the yellow dal is indescribable.

The prices at the restaurant are a little too steep but then given the area in which it is located (Tardeo), I don’t think it is much.

Apart from the décor being minimal and elegant – the place is also very warm in its presence and appearance.

The service is absolutely fantastic. The waiters are courteous, warm and humble. A rarity these days in most restaurants.

If you love food and haven’t tried the Bengali cuisine as yet this is definitely the place for you.
