This was a movie I caught recently but I absolutely loved it. THe plot is a bit too long and varied for me to explain in simple terms so I am skipping it in return for a better explanation of the characters... the real reason I loved the movie. Ulysses Everet McGill a fast talking, verbally articulate, hair obsessed man played by the talented George Clooney is a show stealer. Imprisoned for practicing law without a licence, he convinces his 2 fellow chained convicts to escape promising to split a 1.2 million booty that he claims he robbed from an armoured car while in reality its a lie so that Ulysses can stop his ex-wife from marrying another man and thus he being seperated from his 3 children. YOu cant help but like Ulysses, be it his subtle cunningness, his vocalbury or his obsession with dapper dan hair tonic and hair nets. A brilliant job by George here. Pete Hogwallop played by John turturro as a family loving, long drawly talking and the most cunning and brutish of the group is excellent. Pete's dream is to open a fine dining restaurant and thats the reason he agrees to breakout eventhough he had only 2 weeks left on his sentence. Delmar O'Donnel, a simple minded, good natured and slow witted character played by Tim Blake NElson is sure to make you smile. Delmar agrees to break out since he is in for a long time and because he needs to buy back his family farmland. Another character though limited in screen presence but worth mentioning is Tommy Johnson played by Chris Thomas King who is a 'coloured' guitarist who by his own confession sold his soul to the devil to be able to play the guitar. Together the above four in a sequence in the movie records a song titles ' man of constant sorrow' by a made up band name 'soggy botton boys' for quick cash. What they do not know till the climax is that the song goes on to be a huge hit through out the country. Personally I loved the song, it could be because of Clooney's brilliant potrayal during the sequence or because of the eventual rise of popularity of the poor four underdogs who doesnt seem to catch a break in life. The song achieved tremendous success post the movie where some say that its popularuty has surpassed the movie!!It went on to win Single of the year and 5 grammys for the album!! The movie has a rustic feel to it which I heard was achieved by colour correction to give it the sepia effect. Directed by the Coen brothers the movie was both a commercial and critical success. If you havent caught this movie yet I sincerely suggest u do catch it as it is indeed a good movie.
