One of my most recent rents is Nurse Betty, starring Renee Zellweger, Morgan Freeman, Chris Rock and Greg Kinnear. Basically, here’s what goes down: Betty (Zellweger) is a down-home, innocent housewife type that works in a diner in Kansas. Her only escape from her reality is her favorite soap opera, “A Reason To Love”, starring her hero (or should I say obsession) Dr. David Reidell (Kinnear). She dreams of taking one of the cars from her husband’s lot and running off to meet her “Doctor”. She is married to a really sleazy car salesman (REALLY sleazy - the opening scene is him on a couch with some girl at the car dealership - well, I guess you need to see for yourself) who has been having some shady dealings. Betty witnesses the brutal “scalping” and subsequent murder of her husband by two hitmen (Freeman and Rock), which shocks her into thinking that her fantasy is now her reality. Amidst all of the police investigation, blood and guts, etc. she picks up and leaves to go find her love, Dr. David Reidell. She now believes that the storyline of the soap is her reality. She is chased by the two hitmen, a local reporter and the local sheriff - the rest you need to see.
The acting is quite good throughout - there are several funny one-liners. Greg Kinnear does a great job with this film - I make mention of him particularly because I generally can’t stand him and this was a good job. This is a great dark comedy, to say the least. I think that it was not necessary to have as much gore as there was, however. I do recommend this one - the premise is original and funny. Check it out if you get a chance.
