HISTORY
Ask for NMU in Bambhori, a village 10 kms. outside Jalgaon and chances are that you might be met with a blank stare. Make that Umavi and the selfsame eyes will light up and point to a cluster of buildings on a hilly terrain. Here, in North Maharashtra, you may find all the requisites for a University of the future, but its heart is inevitably stuck in the past.
Was registered in latter part of 1990. But was shifted to its current home only in 1995. The NMU's first VC was Dr. N. K. Thakare. The second was Dr. S.F. Patil. The third is Dr. R.S. Mali, currently serving his tenure.
ACHIEVEMENTS
National Assessment and Accreditation Council's Peer Review team awarded the prestigious 4 Star Status to the University in 2001. In 2002, the University Expert System Project was initiated - the first step towards becoming a paperless office. It received the state level N.S.S. award for the Best University in the state in 2002.
ACCESSIBILITY
The closest city bus terminus is in the heart of Jalgaon city. Buses are available at regular intervals as they ply to and fro between the campus and the city. It is off N.H. 6 and the only way to reach this place is by road. The closest railway station is again in Jalgaon. There is a shopping complex on the campus and hence one does not have to travel too far to grab a bite or to pick up something.
What makes it so special??
I completed my graduation through this University. The college I studied in is affliated to this University. I have had many harrowing experiences at my own college, but the office staff here are curt but disciplined. To elucidate, the administrative affairs of my college are haphazard and the students are treated like rubbish. But come to NMU and its a different ballgame. They have a specialised enquiry counter run by two blind men, who are really very helpful at guiding you. Everything goes on so efficiently that any student visiting the place hold little or no complaints.
They have a 24x7 helpline that actually works. However, to get any work done you have to use just one language and one language only to ensure that it gets done promptly - MARATHI. Being a resident helps, because you can make it to this place on bike in 15 minutes flat.
Another added attraction is its new state-of-the-art Central Library. The location is serene and the view of the city when seen from a vantage point - say, the first floor of the administrative building - is breathtaking. It has a sprawling campus that has no walls surrounding it. Quite unlike any other University in the state.
