I was planning to purchase a new phone for a long time( almost six months:):) After a lot of querying around and searching on almost every review site on mobile phones, I narrowed down on two phones Nokia E71 and E72. Both are stylish business phones with looks to die for. While E71 was an older version, E72 was the latest entrant from the Nokia stable. I finally decided to go for E72 and purchased it for 20, 300 INR on 19th Dec. from a Nokia priority dealer in Bangalore.

For me looks does matter and that’s why I purchased this phone. It looks really stunning and gives you a feeling of real classy phone. The phone is easy to carry around with a nice grip. The steel body on the back is carved with vertical lines in order to provide extra grip. Phones display is nice and bright and with some downloaded themes it just dazzles like moonlit sky. The QWERTY keyboard requires some getting used to but is very smooth and it’s a pleasure to work on.

Phone has four one touch keys mainly for Menu, Calendar, Messaging and Phone book. They can be customized as per the individual requirements. They doubles the purpose by pressing and holding the key meaning that you can customize each key for two functions one for short press and other for long press. Keyboard has few other touch keys for torch, Bluetooth and to turn the phone into vibrating mode. But they are not customizable.

E72 comes with an 8 GB memory card and is expandable up to 16GB. But for the time being 8 GB is enough for me. I love to listen to music while riding on my bike and 8 GB offers a more than enough space for my music collection. The music player is good and provides a decent output both in headset and speaker mode, but still there is a lot of scope for improvement. My previous cell was SE K750i which made me set high standards for music player and unfortunately E72 is no match with K750i in this department. Another drawback that I feel is it doesn’t have any shortcut key for Music player and changing the songs which is a bit of turn off considering I do most of my listening on bike.

I faced one strange problem with music player. There were 4-5 instances where phone just restarts automatically while playing music. I’m not sure why this happening. Need to check this with Nokia guys.

Now coming to E72 Camera, which is supposed to be a 5MP? I haven’t clicked many pictures yet, but still the picture quality doesn’t give a feeling of 5MP. My K750 gave me better results with its 2MP camera then E72L.

Till now was the entertainment part of the phone now coming to business aspect. Phone has everything that a business user requires. Wi-Fi, AGPS, 3G, Business Card Reader(BCR), QuickOffice, Adobe reader, E-mail….you name it and it has it.

I have used Wi-Fi a lot and found net surfing speed quite amazing on the phone. Also there are few in-built applications for Facebook, YouTube, MySpace etc…which are quite handy. 3G is still not available in Bangalore so can’t comment on the speed. BCR is quite useful. I don’t have to take up cards now. I just click a picture of the card and everything on card is stored on my Phone. It’s quite accurate too.

Up to 10 E-mail Id’s can be configured on the Phone and sharing Pictures and documents through mail is quite simple. Since it’s a 3rd gen. S60 mobile there are lots of third party applications available on the net for downloads also.

Few other things that I liked about the Phone are:

1)      Search Functionality: It searches all Contacts, messages, e-mails, gallery etc…for the typed text in real time i.e. search results are displayed as you type. It is quite cool and handy when searching for something.

2)      Phone has dual modes business and personal. You can configure each mode as per your own requirement and switch from one mode to another by just one click on the home screen.

3)      Turning Control: You can snooze the alarm or silence an incoming call by just turning the phone over.

4)      Zip Utility: I can zip my documents and save some space on the memory card.

5)      Memory Card Encryption: This is one thing which I have been waiting for. I’m not sure if any other phones have it. You can encrypt the content of memory card and make sure that nobody can see the contents on the card. This is quite useful for me as practically everything about me is there on my memory card.

6)      800 Mhz processor which is under clocked to 600 Mhz is quite fast and is good for doing Multitasking.

7)      Battery life is quite amazing. I can easily use it for 2 days with lots of voice calls, listening to music and net surfing on Wi-Fi.

All in all I’ll give this phone 4.5 out of 5 star and recommend it to anybody who is looking for a stylish phone with lots of good features.
