The compact (3.2 ounces)Nokia 8890 phone fits easily into any pocket. To access the keypad, you slide open its cover, which adds some length to the phone and positions the mic nearer to your mouth. Slide the cover closed and your call ends. Our only quibble with the phone's design is that the dial pad's keys are small. That's to be expected, but those with big fingers might be put off. Also, accessing Nokia's feature menus can be a bit tedious.

Nokia 8890 has a retractable antenna and an infrared port for linking to infrared-enabled devices, such as PDAs, laptops, and cell phones.

For some reason, Nokia buries the more commonly used features--incoming and outgoing caller logs, for example--which means you have to flip through several icons before accessing those options. Like many of Nokia's phones, however, the phone book stores an ample 250 names and numbers, and the calendar can track up to 50 appointments (if you have the patience to input them into the phone). Another bonus is that you can program up to eight names for voice-activated dialing. Say the person's name and the phone dials his or her number for you.

Nokia 8890 can speak five languages and operate in more than 120 countries on five continents. One should get 2 to 3 hours of talk time and 4 to 6 days of standby time-respectable by small-phone standards. Charge time is fairly impressive. Fully chargeable within 30 minutes.
