After spending 6 months with my Sony T68i and getting tired of the phone hanging up every second day, I decided it was time to get back to Nokia. Of late, Nokia seems to have decided that everyone in this world wants phones in bright colours and looking like kids' playthings. So, despite the wide range from Nokia, my search for a sober phone narrowed my choice down to just a handful of models. From there, picking up the 6610 was easy.

While selecting the 6610 one of the foremost thoughts on my mind was that I want to go in for a model that has sold in reasonable numbers in India. This is based on my experience with a 5210 which I had earlier. One fine morning the chap refused to wake up from his sleep and it took the Nokia Care guys more than a month to get the power chip that had conked - apparently it had to be got all the way from Singapore. Anyways, I guess I better I get to the point - regarding the Nokia 6610.

Design : This is the first thing that attracted me to the phone. I think the phone has a sleek and understated appearance which is more at home in an office environment that on the dance floor. Display colour resolution could have been slightly better though - but then I guess you'd require a better screen resolution.

Features : The phone has some neat gizmos such as the FM Radio, apart from the usual Organizer, Phone Book, etc. Unfortunately you need to plug in the external earphones (which come along with the phone) to hear the radio, which acts as an antenna. The feature that I like the most and use very often is the speaker phone. Voice clarity is extremely clear and its particularly useful when you have to talk while driving.

Usability : Nokia has always been famous for its user-friendly menus, which makes using the phone a breeze even for a mobile novice (a rapidly diminishing species in this world). However, some of the more advanced features such as multiple phone numbers for a single phone book entry could have been better arranged (as they were in my Sony T68i). e.g. if you have more than one phone number against a name, you can't see all the numbers together, but have to scroll through them one at a time.

Nokia PC Suite :One of the best things I like in the phone is the Nokia PC Suite which enables me to backup my entire SIM data as well as synchronize my address book, etc. Also the Nokia Image Converter is great for putting up any picture that catches your fancy as a Wallpaper on the phone. Battery :I don't know whether I am just plain lucky - but the battery seems to last phenomenally long - I can go upto 4 days without recharge, with at least a couple of hours of talk time a day.

Glitches : The only problem that I know of about this phone - and about which a lot has been written on various forums - is related to its Operating System software. If you have a old OS version, you might suffer a problem of the last row LED's of your keypad not glowing. My phone was afflicted with this disease about 15 days after I bought it. However, a visit to Nokia Care and a software upgrade quickly resolved the issue and since then its been almost 3 months and there have been no problems.
