I dont belive in buying a cell phone with a lot of features because I think that each feature should be bought as a specialized device and cell phones should be used only for talking ie calls.

My mom and wife preferred differing from this view and planned to buy me a slightly costlier phone and allowed me to chose on my own.

As I said  I am not much of a mobile phone lover, I thought best to go for one with a little more features(then a blackberry) especially GPS(as I wanted to get a GPS device for my car instead of the phone).

I always thought that the battery backup time for Nokia was the best in business( I have used a lot of different phones(like Motorola, Samsung, Ericsson) but Nokia had the best back up time.

So I decided to go for the Nokia Express music 5800 with GPS, Camera 3.2 MP and "Great" Music feature.

It came for a tag which was a touch lower than 14K Rs.  Came with wired headset and one more free wired stereo headset(I wonder why).

Problem started as soon as I opened the manual because there was an advisory which  said "The TV out feature and anything related to it in the manual should be ignored" - GREAT START that is to say "OUR TV OUT FEATURE DOES NOT WORK PLS DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT USING IT!" .

Hope they could have been a lil more decent and put  the advisory on the box or printed a new set of manuals. But Indians wont sue us, so why bother- proly dats what Nokia said about it(mind you the advisory is in multple interantional languages, so we definetly have company and are not alone).

Okey we will take it feature by feature then,

GPS - Non existent!  the built-in  receiver is made with some Cheap TI chip that does not(repeat NOT) receive GPS at ground level at all(Made harder by the fact that I leave by the seaside ie 0 mts above sea level). I have to go up to third floor to get the signal-it takes about 15mins to lock on.

There is some strange assisted GPS "Feature" pls dont even think about using it, it requires an expensive GPRS connection and it is not actually GPS since you need GSM signal to know your position.

I looked around on the net and this is true GPS DOES NOT WORK ON 5800.(Period) dont break your heart over it.

I bought an external GPS from Mapmyindia and paired it with the phone, now GPS works(Not on the phone though) but Nokia charges about Rs1500pm for the navigation feature which is a bit too much considering the built in GPS does not work and you have already shelled out money for an available feature.

DATS REALLY BAD!

CAMERA: Well the 3.2 MP cam with a carl zeiss lens is really good even with motion it shoots amazing pictures.

DATS GOOD!

Express Music - Well the music is express no doubt because there is a touch sensitive key on the top right of the phone which brings up a small menu to select the stored content, ie music, videos images.

There is also a feature to create playlist on the phone itself which I might add you will find difficult if you use products like the sony walkman(walkman itself not the phone) where you have to be genius to create a playlist and dump it down to your flash player with their Sonicstage software.

Same goes for adding and deleting tracks, you can simply drag and drop content on to the phone with the "Phone browser" software its light and easy again I might add that this would be a pain on Sony and Ipod music players with Sonicstage and ITunes respectively where they try to convert the titles.

DATS GOOD!

Coming to the music output well that is something.

The music is played horribly on the built in speaker why because youll only hear the voice dominating the output and all other tracks going down - like a cheap quality old MW radio. So I tried switching to the headphones but its of rather cheap quality again and its even more horible than the built in speakers.

Then I borrowed my wife's IPOD headphones and it sounded a lil better.

But wait they have a Graphic equilizer function I was being stupid by not using it right . no way they have strange filters like .59 .9 .7 which youll never find in any other decent player and it didnt help a bit.

I checked my theory by playing out the same track on an IPOD, a WALKMAN and EVEN A NOKIA 7610(my wife's phone) but the 5800 really SOUNDS HORRIBLE gives you a pain in the ear.

There is no way that you can listen to an IPOD or a Walkman or hometheatre and think that this is a good music player. May be if you still use an MW transistor this is a good competition.

DATS JUST HORRIBLE!

What ever happened to express music - well it has become Suppress Music.

Thanks NOKIA we love you.

And I still stick to the fact that a phone is a phone used for talking and I have evidence and support from Nokia now.
