To start with, I must tell you that I am a Nokia fan and crazy about Nokia phones.(Which was a mistake I realize now). I bought Nokia 500 six months back. It came with Symbian anna version. I thought its a good buy because Symbian belle update will make this phone a real deal for Rs. 9500.
I thought this has a 1 Ghz processor and it will be lightning fast. But alas it very slow phone. The buzz around belle update made me feel that this phone will perform better with belle update. Nothing good after update too. There were a some features copied from android. That's the story about the update.
I will list the pros first.
1.) Touch response is good.
2.) Display is good indoors
3.) Battery life is good provided 2G network is used.
Cons:
1.) Phone is very slow.
Web browser is unusable. It takes a lot of time to get used to the slowness.(i stopped using it altogether). Zooming in and out is lot of pain. we or the phone doesn't know what is happening.(Even the Nokia default website that loads is slow). Ovi store is slow as well, if not crawling.
Edit: With new update 111.021( September 2012) the browser is usable now.
2.) No graphic processor.
This is a real pain. If you have seen any belle effects in youtube, just forget those when you buy this. This does not support any effects. Its turned off by default, but when you turn on, the transition effects are so slow that you will hate them.
3.) Very unreliable
I don't know if its a specific problem to me, the mass memory 2 GB stopped working after 6 months of usage. Its showing memory in use even after so many hard resets
4.) Microphone
Seldom I have to shout on my microphone for the other person to hear me. It worked fine with Bluetooth headset.
5.) No More updates.
This is a low end mobile(yes Rs.9500). So Nokia is not going to take updates to this device seriously. There are hardware limitations that make this mobile. Even belle is not fully ported to Nokia 500.
Edit:
Nokia just rolled out an update to already released belle. Feels better now :)
6.) Symbian OS
Symbian is a dying operating system. Applications are so much limited when compared to Android.
Verdict:
Although this phone looks like a good buy for 9500, it's not the truth. There are better options available like galaxy ace for some 1000r +(I own a galaxy ace. Its much better than Nokia 500). If you are a die hard Nokia fan like I was,
I would recommend buying a higher end mobile than getting stuck up with this phone.
