Saw the movie today on UTV and thought of penning down an insta-review. No one killed Jessica is a movie inspired by the infamous Jessica Lal murder case. The incident happened in the seedy, power hungry capital of the country - Delhi.

The son of a well known politico decided to snuff the life of a small time model on a night of hedonistic delight when she decided to deprive him of some added pleasure in the form of a glass of drink. Several well heeled denizens who dotted the landscape and shone brighter than the disco lights that night were witness to a cold blooded and absolutely gratuitous murder. All of them soon suffered from a rather robust bout of amnesia and failed to identify the accused or narrate the happenings of that fateful night. In short most of them as witnesses turned hostile. The movie is about what transpired post this unfortunate incident.

The movie deals with a contemporary issue through a recent incident and yet lacks flair in its story telling and fails to lend a gripping effect to the movie. You watch it with no empathy, sadly neither for the deceased nor the hapless relatives of the victim. The agony of having lost a near and dear one and the inability to not even bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book is missing by several furlongs.

Vidya Balan who plays the role of the sister who wants to knock down the brazen murderers under the hammer of justice fails to garner any sympathy. She at best comes across as a morose, grumpy and sad relative. Her character fails to make an impact as a bereaved relative distraught and running from pillar to post. This agony is far from being translated on screen.  The sense of helplessness at not being able to do anything for a wronged loved one is just not adequately netted. The grief expressed or attempted to be expressed is only as much of anybody who has lost their close one.

Rani Mukherji does a decent job with measured spunk of playing the character etched and laid out for her. But the character is rather over the top and somewhere modeled on the lines of a certain Ms. Dutta. The ho-hum proceedings gather some momentum only when Rani enters the frame and decides to correct the travesty of justice. Another downer is the songs which have such a youthful rock vibe and therefore simply fails to buttress the screenplay or accord with the sorrow laden & grim theme of the movie.

ARM REST CLUTCHING MOMENTS**:

1.    None

2.    But the candle light vigil scene passes muster.

MIRTH INDUCING SCENES:*

1.   Jessica’s mom rushing frantically to the hospital on realizing that her daughter has been shot. Inadvertently it turns out to be a comic scene when the woman decides to ham by shrieking out, ‘my baby baby’ and literally come rolling into the scene.
