I can't help but compare NIT to some of the other mediocre further education institutes and universities in India. And to be honest, behind the facade of amazing architecture and seemingly great infrastructure, there doesn't seem to be much difference.
NIT is yet another organization plagued by bureaucracy and colonial attitude that supresses its students and fails to encourage critical thought and creativity - something expected from any univeristy.
And behind the mammoth-investment-backed state of the art labs and auditoriums, there isn't much that can set NIT apart when it comes to the welfare of the student. There are middle-aged professors who will read entire lectures out of a textbook, word for word. They will insist they are always right. And the opportunity to question and debate - well, let's not even go there.
For what it is worth, my advice is to spend a little more and send your son or daughter somewhere else where they can actually grow into an academic who will benefit the economy of India as opposed to yet another slave-robot for a Western corportation.
