New Yorkers

Another good pure vegetarian fast food joint. Been in the chowapatty for as long as I can remember. I think it must be at least 20 years old. Situated at the Sukh Sagar Junction at Chowpatty.

Food

The Cuisine is Mexican and Pizzas. The Pizza's are served in 2 ways, Small and Large. (Initially they had half and Full). The Menus kept changing time and again but the taste of their Pizza and Enchiladas (Clearly the best dishes of the restaurant) remained the same, which is excellent. Let’s start with starters; they have a large variety of starters. The best one being the Onion Rings (No one makes them better like New Yorkers). The Nachos (Melted Cheese on taco shells) are also excellent. The Cheese and Corn Balls are ok but not as half as good as the previous two starters. I liked the American Corn and cheese Enchiladas but many may also prefer the one with the beans. I always like plain Cheese Pizza (The Margarita) but the toppings are also good. The Burritos (Mexican version of a roll) is also good. For rice lovers, you can try the Mexican rice. One of the new items included in the menu is Sizzlers but frankly they were a disappointment and I suggest if you are going to New Yorkers you just stick to Pizza, Enchiladas and Burritos. For the desert try the usual hot chocolate fudge sundae. One of the few restaurants serving mustards.

Price

Way back in 1986 I remember that the toppings of any pizzas were the cheapest in town. A topping with onion used to cost only 1 buck. Although with age and growing prices of essential commodities, the price have increased and for a typical meal of 1 starter, 1 main course item (which could be either a pizza or a burrito or an enchilada), 1 desert and 1 soft drink would cost anywhere between RS 175 to Rs 200 per head. They have take away joints and also do home delivery (Courtesy Meals On Wheels. Meals on wheels is a home delivery service where it is linked up with few South Bombay restaurants like New Yorkers and Quality.) But I suggest the best way to enjoy the food is to go here and have it piping hot. Please order the unlimited cola pitcher if you are going in a large group or are an avid cola drinker.

Decor and Ambience

It is an air-conditioned joint. About 30-40 people can sit in it. They do not take reservations and believe me in vacations and on weekends you have to wait atleast 45 minutes to get an empty place. People come form as far as Ghatkopar to eat here. The typical crowd is Gujarati and Marwari people. The reason why New Yorkers is so popular is because it is a pure vegetarian joint and that is a boon to many Gujarathis and Marwaris. After your order is places they give each person a few puzzles to solve on a paper. There are 3 - 4 games to keep one busy till the food arrives. This is a type of kid-friendly atmosphere which is even enjoyed by the adults and helps a lot to take the mind off waiting for the food to come.

Serve Timing

The typical serve timing is anywhere between 15-20 minutes. But you don't feel bored with the games you solve during the time your meal is being prepared. The biggest let down is that you have to virtually scream for someone to get you water refills.
