Where is our Tamil Cinema Heading Towards?

The Tamil cinema has a long history and a rich legacy. Initially getting the cues from the Drama industry, the cinema industry kicked off in the late 1940?s. Though the Drama Industry focused mainly on Independence issues those days, the cinema had a variety ? from movies like ?Naam Iruvar? (about freedom), ?Andha Naal? (detective and investigation), ?Paraa sakthi? (family and social). The late 50?s and the 60?s saw the rise of mainly family and social issues wit the intermittent kingdom based stories. The 70?s and early 80?s had family stories with Love as a part of it.

The stories would start of with love scenes and would continue with post-marital problems. The late 80?s and the whole of 90?s had a focus on Love. These were mainly dealing with ?how the heroes fell in love and how they marry the heroines?. But the present ? pre and post 2000 scenario has a little focus on Love but the major focus on romantic and sexual deals. So, the shift is from ?Kudumbam? to ?Kaadhal? to ?Kaamam? (Family to Love to Sex). I don?t mean to say all films fall under this category, but a majority (80%) of the films are being produced on commercial terms to attract the youth ? making an ugly business at the expense of the feelings and desires of the youth.

Recently, there have been so many debates regarding the roles of women in Tamil cinema. Films pay actresses no more for their acting, but for their dances, their romantic poses with the heroes and their scanty costumes. A week before I had seen a programme ? a debate that focused on this issue. A lawyer was addressing this issue. She was quoting so many instances in movies portraying vulgarity ? not just costumes, but the lyrics and the screenplays. Most of us don?t notice the https://lyrics. It might be due to either of these two reasons.

One the music dominates and the voices are not clear and distinct. So, the lyrics are not clear and thus don?t reach us. Two the picturisation of the song is so offensive that we forget the https://lyrics. But the lyricists are equally culpable.

A decade age, we had films with just one song where the hero would have to dance with a nightclub lady, saving the heroines. During those years, heroines were also given respect since they had a role to play in the films. They were looked upon as character artists. But now the scenario has changed. The heroines have at the least 4 or 5 duets with the hero and they have to expose their beauty. This has resulted in losing their image and being portrayed as attractive dolls.

This situation doesn?t stop with the movies. It has a very powerful impact on the society. The cinema is one of the most influential media. Just consider a youth ? could be a schoolboy, a college going adult or a workingman. What would he prefer ? a movie like ? Boys?, ?New?? or a movie like ?Autograph?? We can?t blame the young since it is very much natural for his attraction towards sex at these ages. The important problem is that subsequent films are worse than their predecessors.

The percentage of Adults-only films has been growing alarmingly. Another startling thing is the issue ? sex, which these movies address. It has got no limits, no bounds and sans all restrictions.

Sex is like a fire. Once kindled, it devours everything, devastating anything on the way and turning into a holocaust. Can the films, in the future cater to these needs? Can they stoke the fire continuously? How long? Will they show naked bodies roaming, chatting and dancing? Who knows! After that? Probably, they no more will be called ?Blue Films? but ?Adults-only? films. Another thing to be considered is the natural instinct of Man ? the eagerness and the curiosity to go for those, which are prohibited. So, this would result in minors and teenagers fighting for the first tickets. More like an addiction. No, worse than that. The social implications could be grave and extremely serious. Who would stop them? The theatre authorities? No chance. They need money, isn?t it?

I have started this but I am finding it extremely difficult to end this article. Simply because there is no end for Sexual desires. Hoping for a better future and of course, better movies.
