Political movies have been a subject that many directors have relied on. The success of films like Satya, Maachis, Kurukshestra, etc. has proved that it has worked for them in the past. Most of these movies are related to the underworld or corruption. Nayak, dircted by Shankar is no different; although it is handled in a way that has never been tried before. The movie starts off showing Shivaji Rao (Anil Kapoor) doing what he does best, which is being a reporter. He is out getting all latest coverage on all the happenings in India . He is an honest and brave man. One day he is covering a political campaign and meets Balraj Chauhan (Amirsh Puri), the CM, and he knows how corrupt this political is, even worse than the rest. So he decided to interview him that very moment. Balraj happily agrees hoping to gain some more publicity but is unaware of Shivaji’s intentions, which is to air the interview live across the country. He begins questioning about the state of India ’s affairs and the condition of the country, and blames Chauhan for everything. Chauhan, unprepared for this, becomes enraged and challenges Anil to become the CM for one day. The other politicians become angry and question his move, but Chauhan replies that it will make them look like winners in the end. Shivaji gladly accepts and Chauhan resigns and appoints him the leader of the largest political party. Within hours he dismisses all the corrupt politicians and officials, and soon wins the heart of the general public.

Somewhere through all of this he meets Manjari (Rani Mukherjee) and they fall in love with each other, and she becomes his support. His next move is to hear the cries of the people. He sets up booths across the nation where people can complain about their troubles and put in their thoughts. He also starts a hotline where he personally helps people solve their problems over the phone. When his time to step down comes closer, a poll is held to see whether the people would rather have Shivaji remain the CM, or whether they should bring Balraj Chauhan back. The public’s answer is unanimous and Shivaji becomes the official CM. Chauhan and his colleagues, the people who have also been suspended, become furious and conspire a plan for revenge. What follows are some scenes that the audience should themselves witness.

Nayak is a brave attempt to show the public what India ’s political condition is really like. The director has done a marvelous job with the placement of the scenes and strengthening the storyline with the scripts. Mr. India , Anil Kapoor has done a wonderful acting job in the film. His style and expressions showed that he truly is capable of doing all kinds of roles. Rani Mukherjee has a small role in this film, almost as small as Sushmita Sen’s. Still, she does look like a princess in some scenes. Amrish Puri has also done a good job as a villain. The music is composed by the great A.R. Rehman. The problem is that this outing wasn’t as good as expected. The songs ‘Chalo Chale Mitwa’ and ‘Shakalaka’ are very good, the rest are just O.K. Still, the the picturization for the songs were glamorous. This movie probably won’t get a good initial response, but will pick it up early in the week, as most of Anil Kapoor’s films do. Since this subject hasn’t been touched by Bollywood in the past, it is definitely worth watching
